- Abstract:
- Kanban is a tool developed by Toyota Motors Corporation to increase productivity and eliminate waste from their large-scale manufacturing processes. Recently, the system has been used as a tool of choice in Lean software development. Kanban system is the inventory stock control system that triggers the signal for production of product based on actual customer requirement. The present thesis is researching the advantages and disadvantages that Kanban system implementation might cause to the material management processes of a manufacturing facility as well as the theoretical and/or practical reasons behind these results. On an empirical level, the research question is analyzed by participating in Kanban implementation project at the E.B.C.O company unit in Shahrekord. Another research problem is to define the possibilities of improving Kanban system. Since the company utilizes an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system, its functionalities are also considered during the whole study. The research strategy is to collect the data by utilizing academic articles, publications, case studies and material obtained during the employment at the case company and Kanban implementation project. Research methods are a combination between structural, qualitative, and quantitative approaches. The key findings of the study put forward the fact that all the resources were complimenting Kanban system as a part of operations and inventory reduction. The company’s ERP system can perform automatic Kanban calculations in order to define parameters and improve production control. These calculations can also be done without the system, and appropriate mathematical formulas are introduced and utilized. Kanban system is not a magical solution for all the problems related to manufacturing customized products, but with a pull system and the Lean concept, it offers a significant improvement in the production operations and inventory management. The study discusses the flow of implementation activities in manufacturing site prior to Kanban system. The thesis concludes that implementation of Kanban system will reduce lead time, minimize inventory on the floor and optimize storage area. Therefore, the objective of this study is to highlight Kanban system implementation that improves manufacturing system as well as achievingjust-in-time practice
