  7. Abstract:
  8. Collaboration of different agencies working together in a geographical location to reduce waste and optimize the sharing of resources such as energy, raw materials, water, technology, information, etc., made Eco Industrial Parks (EIPs) as a significant step toward sustainability. EIPs has been the focus of increased attention in recent years. Much of the research on industrial parks is related to water and energy network design. This project seeks to identify suitable water network designs for eco industrial parks by identifying the challenges associated with industrial parks. Then, by presenting nonlinear mathematical model and related optimization solution, the superiority of the proposed superstructure is investigated. Optimization for existing data from two industrial parks shows a 4% and 24% reduction in costs compared to previous studies, respectively, and a 4 and 65% decrease in raw water consumption for the two case studies, respectively. Also, a mathematical model is developed to account for the gradual changes in the network which is one of the major challenges in EIPs that leads to a lack of flexibility in the network. We optimize the network for existing information from two industrial parks in scenarios: a) adding new members to the industrial park b) decreasing and increasing capacity of the units. Network changes with different design objective, both economically and environmentally, will be different for the two case studies when the industrial park starts operating with all its members. The economic and environmental objective functions for the two parks increase by an average of 7.28% and 12.31% compared to the unincorporated condition. The enhancement of objective functions has been compared with the performance conditions of the park and we show that although industrial parks are a key solution for sustainable development, there are major technical challenges such as increasing the number of pipelines at different time intervals due to less degree of freedom from the impact
