- Abstract:
- Live load distribution factors for bridge superstructures on which live load is first transmitted through concrete slabs to transverse beams and then through transverse beams to longitudinal beams (three-element superstructure), is expressed in the AASHTO LRFD, only as a function of the distance between the beams; however, in slab-beam superstructures (two-element superstructure), the live load distribution factors depend on many parameters, including slab thickness, clear span, longitudinal beam stiffness as well as the distance between longitudinal beams. This study investigates the factors affecting live load distribution factor and the relationships among these factors in three-element bridges. With respect to the three-element superstructures, which include transverse beams in addition to concrete slabs and longitudinal beams, there is no significant difference between the old and new regulations regarding the relationships expressed to calculate the live load distribution factor. In addition, the research done in this area (three-element bridges) is very small compared to two-element bridges. Other methods applied to calculate the live load distribution factor can also be used to validate the obtained relationships. These methods are the Lever Rule Method and the Finite Element Method (FEM). The finite element method is the basis of this study due to its high accuracy compared to other methods of calculating the live load distribution factor; therefore the formulas to be presented are based on the results of this method
