  7. Abstract:
  8. Asphalt binders are known to exhibit an inherent ability to repair damage. Such selfhealing potentially affects the fatigue damage performance of bituminous materials. There is no consensus about the effect of aging and polymer modification on cohesive healing. Also, the effectiveness of rejuvenating agents have not been addressed in previous studies. In the current study, three healing indices are presented to precisely quantify the healing capacity of various binders. These indices have been defined using the damage characteristic curves derived from interrupted linear amplitude sweep (LAS) tests. Instantaneous healing (IH) describes immediate reduction in accumulated damage after the rest period. Stable healing (SH) shows long-term behavior after the unloading phase. Total healing (TH) is a combination of IH and SH. The results demonstrate that IH does not present a complete picture of healing, particularly at low and middle damage levels. SH, however, better exhibits the detrimental effect of aging, the considerable healing ability of SBS (Styrene–Butadiene–Styrene) binder at higher damage levels, and the positive effect of the use of a rejuvenating agent. The predictive healing models show that, irrespective of the healing index and binder, the impact of loading interruption at higher damage levels, and aging, prevails over the positive effect of an increase in rest period duration
