- Abstract:
- This project evaluates the feasibility of using waste salmon fish bones as the reusable and low cost solid catalyst support for synthesis of biodiesel from waste sunflower oil via transestrification method. Calcinated waste fish bone derived hydroxyapatite (HAP) was employed as the supporter for KOH & K2CO3 to prepare an efficient solid base catalyst for biodiesel production. The catalyst were characterized by SEM-EDS, XRD, FTIR, BET, TGA, ICP. The effects of catalyst preparation conditions (such as fish bone and KOH or K2CO3 calcination temperature, loading of KOH or K2CO3 on the support), reaction conditions (such as reaction time, methanol/oil molar ratio, reaction temperature and catalyst loading) and catalyst reusability were studied in detail. The experimental results revealed that the maximum biodiesel yield is 98.01% using the 40KOH_700@FB_1000 and 91.89% for K2CO3 as the catalysts under the optimum reaction condition (reaction time of 3hr, catalyst loading of 10 wt.% and methanol/oil molar ratio 10:1 and reaction temperature of 65 ℃) due to its highest total basicity. Besides that, after reused for more than 4 cycles, the second catalyst(K2CO3) can still possess a rather high biodiesel yield (above 80%). A little deactivation was found due to K+ ions leaching to the product
