- Abstract:
- In recent years, the subject of student mobility has become one of the most important areas of migration studies. The growing number of students moving from developing countries to developed ones has raised many concerns. Governments and institutions related to this issue have always tried to adopt policies to encourage the return of their diaspora students after graduation. However, to propose evidence-based policies there is a need to understand what shapes the intention of the Iranian international students to return or stay. This study tries to look at the factors that shape the intention of Iranian international students after graduation using the theory of planned behaviour. In the thesis, there are two main phases, namely the interview and the questionnaire. First, by designing interviews based on the planned behaviour theory instructions, semi-structured interviews were conducted and analyzed using thematic analysis. Based on that, the main questionnaire was developed and 194 results were gathered from Iranian students abroad. The data was then analyzed using path analysis method.Research findings show that the students' attitudes, subjective norms and perceived behavioural control are correlated with their intention to return, and individual attitudes are the most important variable. Behavioural beliefs related to "finding a place to start a new family" and "career social impact" are the most important factors in shaping the student's attitudes. "Family" and "friends" are the most important groups that shape injunctive perceived norms, and "perceived discrimination" was an important perceived behavioural control. Knowing the role of these factors in shaping the students' intention to return helps to formulate relevant policies to facilitate their return after graduation
