  7. Abstract:
  8. The objective of the present study is the development of an optimization model to identify the best configuration of renewable-based integrated energy systems. The system includes a combination of renewable energy systems such as wind, solar, hydropower and hydrogen production, storage facilities, and conventional fossil-fuel generators. The developed tool consists of various modules where water-heating assumes the utilization of waste energy as an option. Furthermore, the application, which is demonstrated for a case study in Tehran has been considered. The power exchange with the distribution network and injection of hydrogen produced from excess renewable sources into gas network are included in the model. The optimization model, which was developed in MATLAB® using genetic algorithm, has been utilized for various scenarios regarding manner of connection to the grid and different options of buying and selling energy carriers. Therefore, the results were illustrated and analyzed for various scenarios as sensitivity analysis was accomplished as well. It has been found that for gasoil price of 0.45 dollar per kg, a hybrid renewable energy system begin to be cost effective. In addition, experimental validation of simulation model has been performed using Wind-Solar lab in SERI, which results in total errors of less than 10% for all tests
