- Abstract:
- When a fire breaks out in a tunnel, due to the enclosure of the interior of the road tunnels, hot and poison smoke quickly spreads in the tunnel. This phenomenon, in addition to destroy the tunnel structure, causes a lot of financial and human losses. In recent years, research into fire control has become more important with the occurrence of numerous accidents in road tunnels and fatalities. Longitudinal ventilation is still the main method for controlling smoke distribution in tunnels due to lower construction costs and acceptable efficiency. Numerous studies have been conducted to investigate the effect of different and effective parameters on fire control and smoke emissions in direct tunnels. But curved tunnels have received less attention due to their complexity. According to research in similar tunnels, the incidence rate is higher due to reduced driver visibility. In this study, a numerical method has been used to investigate the effect of horizontal curvature radius and tunnel cross section on the critical velocity of the longitudinal ventilation system and the maximum smoke temperature below the tunnel roof. In general, with increasing horizontal curvature of the tunnel, the critical velocity and maximum smoke temperature increase. Also, the maximum temperature in the tunnel with a rectangular cross section is higher than the tunnel with a square cross section. Finally, the analytical relationships between the dimensionless radius parameter of the curved tunnel with the dimensionless critical velocity and the dimensionless maximum temperature of the smoke are presented
