- Abstract:
- The purpose of this study is to estimate the temperature distribution of the internal body organs using electromagnetic waves. When the external electromagnetic field propagates in biological tissues under a process like microwave hyperthermia, the temperature of the tissue at the field concentration area increases. Due to temperature and frequency dependence of the tissue dielectric, the tissue permittivity changes; thus, the electric field scattered by the tissue changes. Therefore, by measuring the field scattered from the object, dielectric changes of the tissue structure can be calculated. Since the biological tissues’ dielectric coefficient at frequencies lower than 2GHz is linear, increasing the temperature by one degree, degrades the dielectric coefficient by for example one percent. In this study, microwave imaging, which is based on finding the distribution of the object’s dielectric properties, is used to calculate the temperature distribution of the internal body organs. One of the essential applications of this study is the temperature monitoring of cancer treatment through microwave hyperthermia. In this study, the temperature of the cancerous tissue is increased for a specific period in the range of 42 to 43 degrees that increases the performance of radiotherapy or chemotherapy. But the main challenge that prevents the widespread application of this method in medicine, is the lack of concentration of electromagnetic field in cancerous tissues, which might damage the adjacent healthy tissues also. This study aims to use microwave imaging methods and use the prior information about the boundary and the initial dielectric coefficient of the tissue to calculate the tissue’s temperature distribution to improve accuracy of the hyperthermia method through measuring and monitoring the temperature changes of the internal body organs.
