  7. Abstract:
  8. The design and optimization of axial flow compressor is of great importance due to its various industrial applications. Due to the time-consuming and costly procedures of design, manufacturing, and performance tests of the compressor, it is necessary to evaluate and modify its performance with simple, inexpensive and reliable methods before manufacturing the final design. One of the available methods is the results of the linear cascade tests. In this study, in order to investigate this issue and consider its usefulness, an incompressible linear cascade test bed was designed and established based on the mean section profile of the rotor and stator of the axial compressor of Sharif University of Technology gas turbine laboratory. Having done the necessary calibrations and adjustments, extensive tests were performed at different velocities and incidence angles for both cascades. Then the cascade performance curves, such as profile loss, deflection angle, lift, drag and pressure recovery coefficients, in terms of incidence angle, were prepared. By performing error analysis, the error values of each of these parameters were determined and it was observed that these values are in the appropriate range with good accuracy. By applying compressibility corrections and adding other effective losses in the compressor such as secondary and annulus losses, a 1D model for the compressor performance prediction is prepared. Then the results in the compressor performance line in the engine, with cascade tests results obtained. Comparison of the model results with performance results of the compressor, shows a good agreement with 3.6% difference pressure ratio and 4.7% in isentropic efficiency in the operating line. This indicates the effectiveness of the linear cascade test results in predicting the performance of the existing axial flow compressor, which makes it a suitable and useful tool for the design and modification of the compressor. Finally, with confidence in the modeling results, the characteristic curves of the compressor prepared using the results of the cascade tests. It is worth noting that these curves cannot be obtained from the matching directly; Therefore, the results of the cascade tests are quite satisfactory
