- Abstract:
- Zirconium Production Plant (ZPP) is one of the units affiliated with the Nuclear Reactor Fuel Company (Surah) whose main task is to produce zirconium alloy clads for use in nuclear fuel assemblies. In one of the manufacturing stages, the surfaces of the zirconium alloy rods are coated with copper metal to prevent oxidation as well as smoothening the extrusion process. At final stage of the clad fabrication, concentrated nitric acid is used to wash away the copper coating from the clad surface. The waste solution obtained from this copper removal step consists of concentrated copper nitrate residue solution. The recovery of copper from this acidic solution is very important. In ZPP plant, the Sedimentation process is considered to use for copper recover from the effluent of the copper removal process. The purpose of this project is to determine the optimal conditions for the copper recovery process. The experimental results showed that the higher the concentration of nitric acid, the higher the efficiency of copper extraction. Also, by increasing the pH to the neutral pH range, the efficiency of copper extraction increases and beyond this range, increasing the pH has no effect on increasing copper extraction. In addition, the amount of dissolved copper had no effect on the yield. The highest yield occurred in an acid concentration of 65% and pH = 7
