  7. Abstract:
  8. Recent advances in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) technology have made it possible to use them in wireless network applications. Intrinsic features of UAVs such as mobility, maneuverability and flight altitude adjustment, Provides the possibility of fast and low cost implementation of UAV-based telecommunications networks relative to their terrestrial counterparts. One of the applications of UAVs in free space optical (FSO) communications is their use as a relay in the network. Creating communications links when there is an obstacle in the way (such as mountainous areas or buildings in urban areas) or when natural disasters have damaged communications infrastructure are examples of this use of UAVs in relay-assisted networks. In order to analyze the performance of UAV-based FSO systems, we first need to model the associated channel. The channel models presented so far have a lot of complexity and because of this complexity, it gives very little intuitive insight into the proper design and selection of system parameters. This complexity is also an obstacle to obtaining closed analytical relationships. In this dissertation, we present a comprehensive yet simple and tractable channel model by considering four channel impairments , ie atmospheric attenuation, atmospheric turbulence, pointing error and angle-of-arrival (AOA) fluctuations, and by using this model, we suggest a method for selecting the beam width parameter. Finally, using the resulting model, we analyze and compare the bit error rate (BER) performance of the four relay techniques of DF, OAF with fixed gain, OAF with variable gain and OAF combined with OHL. Numerical results show the superiority of OAF relay technique combined with OHL over other techniques
