- Abstract:
- The current research is devoted to the design and optimization of a Blended Wing Body aircraft configuration in the conceptual design phase. In this respect, two objective functions with eight design variables have been considered within the optimization process in order to reach to a desired design. The key objective functions include the aerodynamic efficiency as well as the aircraft empty weight alongside the longitudinal stability requirement that are accounted for within the Genetic algorithm optimization loop. In this regard, some analytical and semi-empirical relations are utilized to determine the aerodynamic and structural characteristics of different designs alongside the numerical aerodynamic methods for added accuracy, where the baseline design is chosen as a 120 PAX existing aircraft. The optimization process is accomplished using 100 generations with close to 57000 design evaluations that have produced a Pareto front based on the two objective functions, out of which many optimal designs can be extracted by the designer. Finally, a Pareto design point is chosen whose configuration, performance and weight have been compared with the baseline design as well as several conventional passenger aircrafts with similar passenger capacity
