- Abstract:
- Different definitions of the term ‘subjective well-being’ have been defined by different researchers. While there is no definite definition for this concept, it can be related to one's life evaluation. The issue of citizens’ subjective well-being has not usually been considered in transportation policies, such as reducing single occupancy vehicle. However, subjective well-being reflects the individuals’ quality of life and can be one of the main priorities of any society. This study tries to find the effect of using various modes of travel including passenger car, motorcycle, public transportation and walking on citizens' subjective well-being. Subjective well-being is measured by individuals' cognitive perceptions of fulfilling needs, having hope in life and an overall assessment of their life satisfaction. In this study, the information about travel modes, people's attitudes toward transportation, lifestyle and personality, land use, mobility, socioeconomic status, residential satisfaction and distance between the residence and facilities is gathered from a database to determine the relation between different mode choices and subjective well-being by ‘binary logistic regression, ‘ordered logit’ and ‘partial proportional odds’ models. The results show that in travel mode affects the subjective well-being. Income-disaggregated modelling showed that the effect of travel mode on well-being differs based on person’s income; it does not just affect the low-income group. Among the travel modes, the ratio of using passenger car and motorcycles have the most positive effect on the subjective well-being in work trips while using public transportation has the least. The binary logistic model result shows that increasing one unit in the ratio of using personal vehicle in work trips increases the chance of tendency to have well-being in life by 23.5%. The results of this study could reveal new dimensions of the effects of transportation behaviour on citizen’s lives and transportation policies
