  7. Abstract:
  8. Condition monitoring of a system refers to the process of measuring and analyzing the aging indicators of critical components of a system that can be harnessed to estimate the system’s health. One of the main interests in condition monitoring is to performing the scheduled maintenance activities for the system. Monitoring the status of the system reduces maintenance costs and prevents unwanted contingencies and outages in the system.
In power electronics, the capacitors are the most critical components of the system from the point of reliability. Capacitors are the leading cause of failure in the power electronic converters so, this essay attempts to attain a solution to monitor the status of the DC link capacitor in a three phase back-to-back converter using systems’ measurable transients. This should be noted that installing peripherals on the converter to monitor its condition, reduces the converter’s reliability and increases the complexity of the system and the production cost. In addition, several articles have presented different methods for condition monitoring of the converter components however, the complexity of their methods is a matter of practicality. The current research attempts to mesure the DC link capacitor degradation indicator using converter’s transient parameters, obtained by current and voltage sensors which are available in every typical back-to-back converter. Then the relevant simulations are performed by MATLAB software and ultimately, the accuracy of proposed method has confirmed by the experimental data
