- Abstract:
- Due to variety of industrial dryers and also importance of selecting appropriate dryer to achieve the required quality of product as well as considering economical aspects, using methods and algorithms which take all effective factors into account and present the best selection is regarded by engineers and researchers. In this paper selection of dryer applying fuzzy logic is presented and the advantages of this method are investigated. For this a program is written using MATLAB programming software and its result compared with real cases. It has been found that there is a good agreement between the prepared program results and industrial experiences. Selection of dryer for a specific application is a complicated problem. Because many factors specially, drying material properties, heating method and drying medium hydrodynamics should be taken into account. Choices are limited due to the reasons such as, required technology, economical aspects, product quality as well as available dryers in market. Considering mentioned restrictions final choice is made based on dryer cost and performance, final product quality and difficulties such as safety aspects (toxic materials, organic solvents ...) and required side equipments. Many viewpoints for selection of dryers are presented in literatures. SAZHIN or numbers table method is one of them. Engineering software packages such as ASPEN apply their own special algorithms which much information about dryers could be obtained with their databases. If mathematics of the problem is not understood well (chump of knowledge) and it's not possible to find a relation for each point of response space, except for some specific points, IF and THEN rules are applied. IF and THEN rules are building block parts of expert systems. In this system each rule is valued as true or false and its membership function can be expressed by means of a real number from the interval [0,1]. The idea of fuzzy logic was applied for the first time in 1975 by E.H. Mamdani who constructed and described a simple control system. Since then there have been many design works and theoretical studies on the selection of control principles and controller parameters. The milestones of this theory development are the fuzzy set concept, fuzzy sets vs. probability measures, linguistic variables and approximate inference, fuzzy dynamic programming and decision making, fuzzy language interpretation, fuzzy algebra, fuzzy stochastic processes, etc. Unlike a standard approach, the fuzzy logic can solve many problems encountered in me classical processing of real data. In the last decade, fuzzy logic has been frequently used in engineering as a practical tool for solving problems related to technological processes. Using fuzzy logic and fuzzy expert systems for selection of dryer type was initially introduced by Lababidi and Baker. Feed material used by these researchers had restricted properties compared with industrial cases (properties such as toxicity, flammability etc.). Hence, their program was simpler than the present work
