- Abstract:
- Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) works based on the accumulation of electrostatic charges produced on the surface of two dissimilar materials while they are brought into physical contact. When the surfaces are separated by a mechanical force, the induced triboelectric charges generate a potential drop, which can lead to generate an electrical current. Since their invention in 2012, TENGs have shown a rapid development in diversity of structure, amount of output power and range of applications, such as self-powered sensors, touch pads, and smart skin. Various kinds of mechanical force can be used for producing electrical energy: human motion, walking, vibration, rotating tire, wind, flowing water, etc. One of the main approaches to enhance the output power of nanogenerators is utilizing novel materials with nanometer structures. In the last decade, two-dimensional materials such as graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have received widespread attention owing to their distinct features including electronic, optical, mechanical, and thermal properties. Here in this research, we have fabricated a triboelectric nanogenerator based on graphene oxide (GO) paper with outstanding power density as high as 1.3 W.m-2, an open-circuit voltage up to 870 V, and a current density of 1.4 µA.cm-2 in vertical contact-separation mode. The GO TENG has been employed as a self-powered humidity sensor to investigate the effect of raising humidity on the output voltage and current by applying mechanical agitation in two forms of using a tapping device and finger tapping. Due to the presence of functional groups on the GO paper, water molecules are inclined to be adsorbed, resulting in a considerable reduction in both generated voltage (from 144 V to 14 V) and current (from 23 µA to 3.7 µA) within the range of relative humidity of 20% to 99%. By addition of graphene oxide nanoribbons (GONRs) to the GO paper, the sensitivity and precision increased by 100% and 40%, respectively. Moreover, a different design of GO TENG in single-electrode-mode was applied as a self-powered photodetector for visible light, as well as UV irradiation. These results provide a promising applicability of the suggested self-powered GO TENG sensors in portable/wearable electronics
