An Empirical Exploration of Social-business Tensions, and their Implications for its Sustainability: An Empirical Study from the Emerging Market of Iran

  8. Social business is a type of business whose first priority is to influence and solve a social problem, and unlike commercial businesses, the second priority is to maximize profits. This type of business sees earning money as a means to sustain itself and increase social impact. According to this definition, the mission of social businesses has a dual nature that these businesses are trying to achieve a balanced balance between both social and economic aspects of their mission. Leading research seeks to focus on social businesses within Iran to address how these businesses manage the tensions that arise from their dual mission. This research has tried to use the communication network approach to answer this problem. So, the main question of the research is how network theory helps them to face the tensions of social businesses? To answer this question, the qualitative research method has been used with an exploratory approach and multiple case studies. Seven case studies were reviewed, in which semi-structured interviews were conducted with 8 founders and managers of these social businesses. done. Then, using the interview data, the validity of which was examined using secondary data, theme analysis was performed and eight main themes were obtained in 4 conceptual categories. The first category examines in more detail the tensions of social businesses in Iran, and the next three themes are “legitimacy and acceptance”, “transfer of knowledge of social businesses” and “access to tangible and intangible network resources”, respectively Explain how to manage stresses using network theory. The findings of this study help to better understand the management of social businesses in Iran and also develop the subject literature in the field of network theory as well as social businesses in the world.
