- Abstract:
- Cracking is one of the most important distresses in RAP mixtures. One of the common approaches to remedy this problem is to use crumb rubber (CR) and styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) for binder modification. Over time, many asphalt pavements containing modified binders reach the end of their service lives and need to be overlaid. This study evaluated the effects of binder modification and aging on the cracking performance of asphalt mixtures. Two long-term aging levels (placing the loose mixture in an oven for 3 or 6 days at 95 degrees Celsius) were considered for investigating the effects of aging on the cracking performance of asphalt mixtures and producing laboratory-prepared artificial RAP. The IDEAL-CT test was used to assess the resistance of asphalt mixtures against cracking at the intermediate temperature. The results showed that using SBS and CR modified binder improves the cracking performance of asphalt mixtures in the short term. Long-term aging causes a more severe decline in the cracking performance of modified mixtures than that of unmodified ones, indicating higher aging susceptibility in modified mixtures. Furthermore, with the intensification of aging (from 3 days to 6 days), the positive effect of binder modifiers on the cracking performance of asphalt mixtures is completely eliminated, leading to poorer cracking performance of the modified mixtures compared to the unmodified one.It can be concluded that recycling modified RAP instead of unmodified RAP, depending on the RAP aging level, can either improve or aggravate the cracking performance of RAP mixtures. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the long-term performance of the modified mixtures at more severe aging levels. It is also necessary to assess the long-term performance of recycled mixtures incorporating modified RAP
