Experimental Study on the Effect of Surfactant and Brine Salinity on Stability and Flow Behavior of Foam in the Presence of Oil

  8. Gas injection is one of the most common methods to enhance oil recovery. But due to the low viscosity and density of gas, viscous fingering and gravity over ride usually happens which lead to reduction of gas injection performance to oil production. Foam injection is one of the techniques that has the potential to improve oil production by increasing. Foam apparent viscosity is higher than gas and its liquid which is made from it. So it can increase sweep efficiency and enhance oil recovery. However, presence of oil can destabilize foam. Beside, salinity has different effects on foamability and foam stability. Foam stability in high saline environment is a challenge. Therefore, the stability of foam with different surfactant types and concentration in solutions with different salinity should be investigated to have a successful operation. Also carbonate reservoirs usually have naturally fractures. So gas injection has a poor sweep efficiency so foam can be used to make a resistance in fracture and push the gas bubbles into the matrix.In this research at first, by static bulk test, foamability and foam stability of different solutions are investigated. Then, solutions which have the best foamability or foam stability are determined. Then by considering of the contact angle test results, the best solutions are chosen to use in dynamic tests in micromodel.Based on results, SDS surfactant has more foamability and foam stability than CTAB and Triton. Beside different salinity concentrations have different effects on foamability and foam stability with compare to free-salts foam. Oil has destructive effect on foam and it can reduce foamability and foam stability. In dynamic tests it is seen that foams of SDS have the most oil recovery and CTAB and Triton have the second and third places respectively.
