- Abstract:
- In this thesis a waveguiding structure is introduced and analyzed for terahertz applications. The proposed structure is called Inhomogeneous Parallel-Plate Ladder Waveguide (IPPLWG). This waveguide is formed by locating a periodic structure inside parallel-plate waveguide.This periodic structure itself consists of a array of metallic posts surrounded by silicon. The combination of metallic posts and silicon have the capability of guiding and confining of EM waves in terahertz band. IPPLWG can be used in implementing the passive terahertz devices such as filters and couplers. The main objective in this thesis is to characterize the IPPLWG for potential applications. Because IPPLWG has open sides, Commercial EM solvers cannot be used to directly perform modal analysis. The analysis in this research has been done by applying Generalized Multipoles Technique (GMT). IPPLWG is intrinsically three dimensional but presence of upper and lower plates and homogeneity in vertical direction make it possible to transform the analysis to a two dimensional problem. The results from modal analysis such as dispersion diagram and attenuation constant and fields distribution have been extracted. The IPPLWG has been also simulated in a commercial software based on Finite Element Method (FEM) by designing proper excitation. Then the propagation and attenuation constants have been both estimated through single mode calibration technique. They have been compared to the ones obtained by GMT and the comparison shows complete agreement. Therefore, we can conclude that results from modal analysis are reliable and the IPPLWG has been successfully characterized. Moreover, the two dimensional hybrid formulation of GMT developed in this thesis, is a rigorous tool and can be applied to analyze similar 2D structures.
