  7. Abstract:
  8. In recent years, a number of studies have focused on investigating the relationship between vehicle type choice and usage. A comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing this topic can be extremely beneficial in transportation and urban studies, as well as future policymaking. In this study, the relationship between vehicle type choice and usage is investigated in the context of the city of Tehran. To provide a better understanding of the corresponding socio-economic variables, each of the decisions regarding vehicle type choice and usage in this relationship is viewed as an interrelated dimension of a single choice package rather than two independent choices. The primary data set used for this analysis is derived from a survey that collected information using questionnaires from private vehicle drivers in Tehran in 2017. Private vehicles are grouped into five distinct categories based on their weight: small, compact, medium, large, and SUV. The results of this study indicate the role of socio-economic and built environment variables in both vehicle type choice and usage and are indicative of a significant magnitude of unobserved factors that affect both vehicle type choice and usage, as well as a positive dependency between them. Furthermore, the Frank copula is the fittest structure, and Kendall`s τ coefficient between error terms is computed as -0.43 (small), -0.45 (compact), -0.43 (medium), -0.47 (compact), and -0.48 (SUV)
