  7. Abstract:
  8. Sustainable energy supply and preservation of the environment have become the main motivations to integrate more renewable energy sources in electrical networks. However, with an increasing penetration of renewable energy sources in the modern electrical grids, new challenging issues arise regarding the power system planning, operation, control and protection. An important technical issue is the difficulty in achieving the frequency stability of these systems, as the renewables are often operated at the maximum power point, resulting in less generation units that provide reserve power. Moreover, the rotational inertia of the system is reduced due to the decoupling of the renewable energy sources from the AC grid, using power converters. Therefore, the renewable energy sources do not effectively participate in frequency regulation. Thus, new control schemes are necessary for renewable energy sources and power systems to maintain the frequency stability. One of the best methods to increase the participation of renewable resources in regulating the grid frequency is to use energy storage systems. Energy storage systems are very suitable for participation in frequency regulation due to the features such as wide controllability, high response speed, high efficiency and increasing reliability in the production of renewable resources. The use of energy storage systems in regulating the frequency of the grid requires effective and optimal planning and operation for them. In this research, efficient planning of the energy storage system, which includes choosing the right type, as well as determining its optimal capacity and optimal installation location, has been investigated. Also, the appropriate operation method of the energy storage system to participate in the network frequency regulation is provided. All the proposed methods have been verified on sample networks and their effectiveness has been proven
