  7. Abstract:
  8. Today, accidents are considered as one of the main causes of human mortality in the world. According to the World Health Organization, about 1.35 million people die in accidents each year, and 20 to 50 million people are injured because of accidents. In our country, about 17000 people are killed in traffic accidents annually. The mentioned statistics clarify the significance of paying attention to traffic accidents and identifying the factors that lead to them, as well as considering the strategies and policies for reducing accident rates. Due to the fundamental role of human factors in the occurrence of car accidents, the use of models that include the personality and attitude of drivers can have a special place in predicting accidents. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of personality traits, lifestyle, and drivers' attitudes along with other factors such as socioeconomic characteristics, transportation behavior, and vehicle characteristics on the occurrence and severity of accidents. A database of 740 drivers who have reported their accident information in the last 5 years by face-to-face interview method has been used in this study. The questionnaire includes safety attitudes, transportation-related attitudes, lifestyle, and personality traits as subjective variables and socio-economic characteristics, vehicle characteristics used, and transportation behavior as objective variables. The Binary logit modeling approach, ordered logistics, and nested logistics have been used to analyze the relationships between these variables and the severity of accidents. The results show that drivers' attitudes toward safety and transportation issues are a good descriptor of the occurrence and severity of traffic accidents. The findings of this study indicate the essential role of personality traits and lifestyle in predicting traffic accidents. The results also indicate that the socioeconomic characteristics of the driver, including age, education, and income affect the occurrence and severity of accidents
