  7. Abstract:
  8. The purpose of this research is the aerodynamic design of a 100 kW transonic ducted fan. Today, the aviation industry is moving towards the design of electric driven aircraft propulsion. Transonic ducted fans are one of the viable options that have been used in medium and heavy aircrafts due to their high specific power. In this research, the meanline model has been used for the initial design. By applying the design constraints, design limitations, design and functional parameters, the initial design point is found and then a sensitivity analysis is performed with respect to the effective design parameters to obtain the optimal design point. For the initial design of the transonic ducted fan, the basic equations of rotating machineries and empirical models have been used. Further, the performance of the fan is examined at off-design conditions. Furthermore, the three-dimensional geometry of the transonic ducted fan was developed using commercial software and then simulated with Ansys software for identifying the optimal design of the fan. A very good agreement is obtained. Finally, 3D numerical simulation is used to examine the off-design performance. For validation, the available results of NASA rotor 67 transonic fan in the open literature have been used. In conclusion, to design a 100 kW transonic ducted fan, first a 945 kW transonic fan was designed and validated. Then, the 945 kW fan design methodology was used for a 100 kW transonic ducted fan design. In this research, it was shown that the performance of the ducted propeller was better compared to the open propeller and as a result, it provided more thrust. Also, the 100 kW transonic ducted fan has a higher specific power, which shows its superiority compared to the ducted propeller. On the other hand, it was shown that the fan with a design point at a relatively high subsonic point has better performance due to the absence of shock wave losses
