  7. Abstract:
  8. Lateral spreading is defined as finite lateral displacement of mildly sloping grounds or those ending in free faces induced by liquefaction. The phenomenon of lateral spreading caused by liquefaction in coastal areas and mildly sloping grounds has caused significant damage to deep foundations of engineering structures such as bridge and buildings in severe earthquakes. Since earthquake is unavoidable, therefore, it is necessary to provide appropriate solution to reduce the effects of liquefaction induced lateral spreading. Despite conducting various laboratory and field studies by previous researchers, there is still no comprehensive approach to evaluate the effects of lateral spreading on piles. One of these approaches to deal with the phenomenon of liquefaction induced lateral spreading is the use of stone columns. In this research, we use stone columns for prevent of lateral spreading. For this purpose, a physical model with the profile of three soil layers including the bottom non-liquefiable layer, liquefiable layer, crust layer and 29 dense stone columns with a diameter of 1.5 times the piles was made. On the physical model made for this purpose, for stage of loading were carried out, the result of which – except for the first loading- have been examined in this research. The mentioned experiments were carried out using Sharif University of Technology shake table and the laminar shear box with inner length, width and height of 306, 172 and 180 cm. In order to record the values of pore water pressure, acceleration , displacement and bending moment, several sensors were installed in the soil around the piles and in the free field of ground. In this research, the results were analyzed in the form of time history of acceleration, displacement, bending moment, pore water pressure
