  7. Abstract:
  8. The response modification factor (coefficient of behavior) of structures (R) is a parameter that is used during their design using the linear static analysis method to account for the effects of the non-linear response of the structure considered. Therefore, the existing seismic codes consider it necessary to use the R factor during the design process. In addition, for each family of structural systems, the Codes propose a specific R factor in a very general manner. In this project, an effort has been made to obtain and propose a correct, relatively accurate, and logical coefficient of behavior for two-dimensional steel frames equipped with a special type of bracing. In this regard, the effects of influencing parameters such as the ‘number of spans,’ the ‘length of the spans’ and the ‘number of stories’ on the R factor of the structure was investigated. In total, 540 frames equipped such braces, including frames with 1 to 5 spans, 1 to 10 stories, and spans of 3, 5, and 7 meters, with different configurations and different number of braced spans were studied. First, using pushover analysis, the behavior of the mentioned frames was studied. Then, through Uang's method, seismic parameters were extracted. Finally, by performing linear regression, a relationship was presented to predict the optimal R factor for such frames. The obtained results indicate that for the range of studied frames, the R factor has a direct relationship with the number of spans, the length of the spans, and inverse of number of stories. On the other hand, the studied buildings can be classified into short, intermediate and fairly-high categories for which the R factor was calculated to be 5, 4.86 and 4.5, respectively
