- Abstract:
- The microfluidic device, known simply as microfluidics, is an emerging technology that has become a significant tool for pharmaceutical businesses to process and analyze materials for developing, optimizing, testing, and delivering various drugs in advanced nanocarriers. Technically, microfluidics is a technique to handle small solution volumes (nanoliters to picoliters) in microchambers of different geometries and dimensions ranging from a few nanometers to hundreds of micrometers. Each year, many pharmaceutical drug delivery systems have failed clinical translation because of scale-up problems. Now, scientists are trying to find some suitable alternatives and more robust methodologies to scale up these advanced systems. Significant work is focused on increasing the production yield of drugs with promising potential for the diagnosis and management of different diseases. This can be achieved accurately and reproducibly by utilizing the microfluidic technique. This chapter discusses an ever-expanding library of microfluidic systems with variable shapes, construction, and chemical composition. The ability to control flow in microchannels has presented microfluidics as a promising tool for cell sorting. The application of microfluidics in the screening of drug candidates is also discussed. Finally, microfluidics has an excellent capability to handle complex processes finding applications in the preparation of nanoscale drug carriers leading to improved efficacy with minimal adverse effects. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd.
