- Abstract:
- In chemical processes, caustic soda is widely used in absorption towers to remove impurities. Remaining adsorbent stream which is known as spent caustic, due to the presence of organic and inorganic loads in the spent caustic mixture, it is necessary to bring the chemical oxygen demand to acceptable environmental values. Conventional treatment of this type of effluent methods that has been investigated at this research, which are as follows: 1. incineration 2. neutralization 3. wet air oxidation; 4. catalytic wet air oxidation; 5. advanced oxidation process; 6. biological treatment 7. physical methods. In this research, the aforementioned methods have been studied first and the required information has been extracted from the articles, then for each method many number of characteristics including energy consumption, consumables, optimal arrangement of equipment, etc. for wide range of investigated parameters has been obtained from simulation. By using the information obtained from the simulation, for calculation of total price of each method based on three parameters of flow rate, chemical oxygen demand and sulphide amount in the inlet effluent, modeling has been done by using neural network and mathematical relationships. Finally, diagrams for all the effective ranges of the parameters has been extracted to provide a solution for choosing the optimal technology for treatment of spent caustic effluent. As a criterion problem, the information of naphthenic type effluent from oil refinery has been used
