  7. Abstract:
  8. Estimating the direction of arrival (DOA) of an impinging signal from an RF scattering object, and subsequently determining its location when there is no line-of-sight (LOS) channel between the object and receiver, is a challenging issue in sensing and wireless communication systems. This thesis presents a modified multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm, utilizing a single-element receive antenna and harnessing the capabilities of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) to tackle this issue. It is demonstrated that by leveraging massive low-cost passive elements able to reflect signals with different phase shifts in consecutive snapshots, RIS can generate linearly independent signal components necessary for applying subspace methods. Next, we introduce a promising DOA-based localization algorithm for a multi-object scenario by exploiting at least three RISs and a single-element antenna receiver. With a similar idea to the localization algorithm, we propose a simple method for canceling the interference caused by paths which do not intersect RIS. We solve the data association problem raised in the localization process with an S -D assignment algorithm. To assess the accuracy of estimated parameters, we derive the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) for both DOA estimation and localization problems. As shown in the numerical results, the proposed DOA estimation algorithm's RMSE converges to the CRLB as the received SNR increases, and the localization algorithm can reach desirable accuracy within sufficiently large received SNRs and RISs mounted in suitable positions
