- Abstract:
- Considerable damage is caused by wildfires to properties, wildlife, and human lives in Iran, as in other parts of the world. The northern regions face heightened risks due to high fuel loads exacerbated by global warming and drought. To evaluate the capability of the WRF-FIRE model, which integrates atmospheric and fire models, on regions where available data is limited, simulations were conducted for the wildfire that occurred in the Malekroud Forest in 2010. The fire domain utilized the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) mode, enhancing simulation accuracy and reliability. Various scenarios were designed to assess the model’s sensitivity to uncertainties such as fuel types, moisture content, and load. The accuracy of the simulations was evaluated by comparing the simulated and real fire perimeters using Jaccard similarity coefficient, Sorensen coefficient, and overestimation index. Additionally, the effects of fuel type, fuel moisture content, and fuel load on the head fire rate of spread, moisture, and heat flux were investigated. Examining different scenarios indicated that the fuel type "closed timber" with a fuel load of 1.120 kg/m² and a fuel moisture content of 13% results in accurate simulation, achieving a Jaccard Similarity Coefficient of 67%, Sorensen coefficient of 82%, and with an overestimation index of 0.72. In conclusion, despite uncertainties and limited available data in Iran, the WRF-FIRE model demonstrates its capability to simulate wildfires effectively, providing valuable insights for firefighting efforts
