  7. Abstract:
  8. Photoacoustic imaging, as an innovative imaging technique of recent decades, has garnered significant attention. By combining the advantages of optical and acoustic waves, this method offers considerable potential compared to other imaging modalities. In this study, in order to improve image quality in photoacoustic imaging systems, the existing challenges were first identified and analyzed. Ignoring these challenges can result in noise, artifacts, and a reduction in spatial resolution in the final image. Therefore, by adopting a systematic approach and focusing on addressing these issues, efforts were made to compensate for acoustic heterogeneity as one of the main problems. For this purpose, after reviewing and presenting various solutions, the optimal compensation method—utilizing speed of sound distribution data from ultrasound computed tomography (USCT)—was selected and applied. In this regard, an optimized forward model was developed to accurately account for the speed of sound distribution and correct the wave propagation path. Furthermore, simulations were conducted in the form of various scenarios, including two-layer and multi-layer tissues with different phantoms, based on the developed model. Finally, qualitative results obtained from the reconstruction using back-projection and model-based methods with different regularization parameters, as well as two quantitative metrics, PSNR and SSIM, were presented to confirm the improvement of the final images
