- Abstract:
- The technology of Millimeter Imaging, one of the latest imaging technologies, has significant advantages over other existing methods, such as X-ray Imaging. The main benefit of this method lies in the fact that due to the negligible energy of photons in millimeter waves, there is no risk of cellular mutations and the development of cancer cells. This feature has made millimeter/microwave technology, due to its high reliability and safety for the human body, widely applicable in recent years in security, medical, and other fields. In security applications, conventional security monitoring methods use optical images or metal detectors to monitor individuals in sensitive and high-traffic areas and to detect prohibited objects. One of the limitations of these traditional technologies is their weakness in detecting non-metallic threats or objects hidden under clothing, along with inadequate accuracy and performance speed. With millimeter wave technology, images can be obtained using electromagnetic waves, enabling the detection of both metallic and non-metallic objects hidden under clothing, inside bags, etc., thus overcoming the limitations of older technologies. The early generations of these systems were designed based on a combination of mechanical and electronic scans to perform imaging at a reasonable cost and with simple designs. However, the long time required for mechanical scanning in high-traffic areas was a significant barrier to the effective use of these systems. To solve this problem, a new generation of imaging systems, based on fully electronic imaging, was introduced. In these imaging systems, the digital section plays a central role in managing the imaging process and data processing. This includes receiving and detecting the type of packages through fast interfaces like Ethernet, then scheduling imaging, converting analog data to digital, executing processing algorithms on digital data, and finally sending processed data to a computer for image reconstruction. The main goal of this thesis is the effective digital implementation of a fully electronic imaging system based on millimeter wave technology using a Two-Dimensional Antenna Array on FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Arrays)
