- With the expansion of the use of electric energy, the importance of sustainable supply of this energy has been revealed. The task of supplying this energy is with power systems, therefore, for a stable supply of electrical energy, it is necessary to continuously monitor the systems. Power systems are composed of various destructible components such as cables. There are various methods and tests for maintaining and monitoring power cables. One of the daily maintenance methods of alternating current cables is called very low frequency testing. The main advantage of this test is the small and portable nature of the test equipment. In this thesis, the design of a very low frequency alternating voltage source based on bi-directional converters for insulation test application is presented. The reason for the bi-directionality of the converter is the impossibility of managing the heat losses of the return energy of the equivalent capacitor in large cables during the discharge period. The design is based on the idea of modulation in order to provide voltage amplification with a transformer and by using a new voltage multiplier converter which has been converted into a four-quadrant converter with fully controlled bi-directional semi-conductor switches. The proposed design has been simulated and verified in MATLAB software. The purpose of this thesis is to present a design of a converter to produce a sinusoidal voltage with an amplitude of 20 kV at 0.1 Hz for alternating current cables with a capacitor of 0.6 microfarads for very low frequency testing equipment. Laboratory results are presented for a simple sample with an output voltage of 200 volts
