  7. Abstract:
  8. Achieving sustainable production of high-quality food is a pressing issue for both developed and developing countries. With the rise in urbanization, climate change, and decreasing access to potable water, traditional agricultural methods are not suitable for meeting the future needs of the world. In this context, automated vertical farms are gaining attention. These farms allow us to minimize water consumption and pesticide use while signifcantly increasing the yield per square meter. To achieve sustainability in their operation, these farms must maximize effciency. A key challenge in this regard is minimizing the energy consumption of the elevators used in vertical farms. In this research, we aim to propose a new solution to this problem by building on previous modeling eforts. Specifcally, we are dealing with a mixed-integer programming problem. Given that optimizing the energy consumption of elevators in vertical farms is an NP-Complete problem, our approach involves using metaheuristic algorithms to solve it. We hope that, in the end, this research will yield an appropriate solution to this problem
