- Abstract:
- The main objective of this thesis is investigation of cold formed steel sections capability for design and performance of beams, plate Girders and special moment resisting frames. Cold framed steel sections have special properties which are different from hot rolled sections and so their capability and efficiency for application in design and performance of beams, plate Girders and CFS-SBMFs must be investigated and studied particularly. In this thesis, the cold work effect on strength and ductility of virgin steel plates, the validity of Karren (AISI) equation and also ECCS (Euro code3) formula for thick plate sections and the failure modes of CFS Angle sections are investigated by experimental tests. The advantage and capability of CFS sections, for design and performance of beams and Girders, the types of CFS-SBMFs, their specifications, beam column connection and design requirements are studied. To provide of required ductility and energy dissipating capability for CFS-SBMFs, the investigation of energy dissipating mechanism and ductility providing methods for them is performed. CFS-SBMFs made of CFS zee sections with clock bolts configuration beam column connection are investigated by experimental tests. Lattice CFS-SBMFs including of Truss frames and Vierendeel frames are discussed and investigated. CFS-SBMFs with corner restraint are presented. To investigate CFS – SBMF with corner strap restraint behavior and response against lateral forces, and corner strap restraint capability as EDM, three corner strap restraint frame specimens subjected to monotonic and cyclic tests. This thesis is included of four sets of experimental tests. This thesis innovations which can be applied in design and performance of cold-formed steel structures are included of: Investigation of Karren (AISI) and Euro-code 3 (ECCS) equation validity for over strength definition in thick plate CFS sections by experimental tests, experimental investigation of cold-work affecting factors and CFS sections failure modes, providing of energy dissipating mechanism and required ductility for CFS-SBMF by creation of hot-rolled converted section in frame beam and application of beam column connection yielding through plate, numerical and experimental investigation of CFS-SBMF made of CFS zee section with clock bolts configuration beam column connection as EDM, CFS truss-frame energy dissipating mechanism and seismic design method, numerical and experimental investigation of CFS-SBMF with corner restraint as EDM
