- Abstract:
- The aim of this research is to find the optimal value of process parameters and type of feed in ion exchange chromatography system for nitrogen isotope separation and 15N stable isotope enrichment. First, by studying the articles and reviewing the previous works, the effective parameters on the ion exchange chromatography process were identified and the method of the process was determined. In the ion exchange chromatography process, various factors and parameters are effective, including the type of resin and its cross-linking percentage, the migration length of the ammonium band, the ambient temperature, the type of feed and elution solution, the concentration of feed and elution solution, and the flow rate of feed and eluent phase. Among all these parameters affecting the process, three parameters were selected according to the existing conditions for their measurement and optimization, and the rest of the parameters were kept constant. The design of experiment was done for three parameters: type of feed, concentration and flow rate of solutions. In this research, strong acidic cationic resin Dowex 50w x2 with 2% cross-linkage was used, which showed good performance in isotope separation. The migration length of the ammonium band is considered to be 160 cm by using two 1-meter series columns with a diameter of 1.5 cm, that are packed with about 80 cm of resin. The ambient temperature was set to 25°C using a water jacket around the columns, and sodium hydroxide elution solution with the same concentration as the feed solution was considered. The results obtained in this research show that among the investigated factors, the most influential factor is the concentration of feed and eluent, which decreases the isotopic ratio of the output product and its optimal value is 0.3 M. Also, ammonium hydroxide feed showed better performance than other two types of feed
