  7. Abstract:
  8. Humidification-dehumidification (HDH) systems are known for their simple structure, low-grade energy consumption, ability to work with saline water with high salinity, and suitability for remote areas with limited freshwater resources. This study uses a numerical method that includes thermodynamic analyses (involving heat and mass transfer modeling) and economic aspects of a humidification-dehumidification system with a packed bed humidifier and a heat pump (HP) unit. Since the air leaving the humidifier is usually not fully saturated, the Poppe model is used to design the humidifier. This study evaluates the effects of various parameters, including mass flow ratio (MR), different compressors with various rotational speeds, brine temperature, air inlet temperature, and humidifier dimensions (packing height (fill zone) and diameter) at different salinity levels on the thermal performance including exergy destruction, gain output ratio (GOR), recovery ratio (RR), Yield, CPL, and effectiveness of the humidifier. In addition, a basic thermodynamic model based on the Poppe method is presented under similar conditions to verify the results of the proposed model, which are almost identical. The results show that increasing the humidifier dimensions increases the efficiency. Parametric analysis shows that the proposed system achieves an outlet gain ratio of 2.603, a Yield of 16.3 kg/h, and a CPL of $0.00939/liter. Finally, this study provides valuable tips for designing combined humidification-dehumidification systems with heat pump units under similar conditions to achieve the desired output efficiency and recovery ratio
