- Abstract:
- This study presents a comprehensive modeling framework to support the decarbonization of industrial energy systems through the integration of hydrogen technologies and multi-energy coordination. The study aims to address the challenges of planning and operating energy infrastructure in hard-to-abate sectors such as steel, refining, methanol, and ammonia production. A multi-node energy hub optimization model is developed, capturing electricity, heat, gas, and hydrogen flows across spatially distributed industrial sites. The model includes detailed representations of hydrogen production (via electrolysis and steam methane reforming), storage, and transmission technologies, as well as sector-specific energy demands and technology configurations. A real-world case study based on the GET H2 Nukleus project in northwest Germany is used to evaluate different transition pathways under varying fuel prices, carbon penalties, and policy incentives. The results demonstrate that a mix of blue and green hydrogen technologies offers an optimal pathway, achieving cost reductions of up to 16%. Further integration of carbon capture reduces costs by 26.2%, while industrial symbiosis yields reductions of up to 30% if carbon capture implemented. Sensitivity analyses are conducted to account for uncertainties in policy, energy prices, and technological progress. The findings emphasize the critical role of coordinated infrastructure investment, supportive policies, and cross-sectoral planning. The proposed framework provides a decision-support tool for regional energy transition strategies and delivers practical insights into the role of hydrogen in fostering sustainable industrial ecosystems
