Long-Lead Streamflow Forecasting Using Ensemble Streamflow Prediction Technique (ESP) and Large-Scale Climate Signals
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Abrishamchi, Ahmad (Supervisor) ; Moradkhani, Hamid (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this research, two of the most prominent known sources of interannual and interdecadal climate variability in the form of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) are analyzed to assess the influences of these large-scale climate phenomena on water supply in the Zayandeh-rood River Basin. For this purpose, any shifts in the mean and variance of the inflow volume of the Zayandeh-Rood Dam in different climate conditions (resulted by different combination of ENSO and PDO phases) has been analyzed and compared with similar statistics in neutral condition to find out if the differences are statistically significant. Correlation analysis indicates that the...

Abstract
The twin-entry radial inflow gas turbine is extensively used in engine turbochargers. The use of twin-entry radial flow turbine in the turbocharging systems makes it possible to use the kinetic energy of pulsating exhaust gases. This turbine is usually exposed to partial admission conditions in engine operating conditions, which the flows in each inlet are not equal for most of the time. This partial admission varies from zero flow in one entry with full admission in the other, to full flow in both entries. The flow pattern in this turbine is complex and three dimensional due to geometry and inlet conditions. Therefore, better understanding of the flow pattern and losses in the turbine can...

Abstract
According to the environmental lows and standards, wastewater of petroleum industries such as refineries and petrochemical that include many petroleum compounds like aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons, must be treated up to desirable limit, before entering the collecting network. Using microorganisms is one of the fundamental ways of biodegradation of these polluted compounds. Since phenolic compounds are the main components of raw petroleum, strains that are capable of tolerating phenol and usage of this poisonous hydrocarbon are specifically important. Therefore, in this study the potentiality of the indigenous thermophilic bacterium Nocardia otitidiscaviarum strain TSH1, for degradation...
Applying Zoning Method for Solving 3D Fluid Flow Problems with Free Surface and Common Boundary Between Two Fluids by Using BEM (Case Studies: OWC Power Plant and Open Ended Storage Tank)
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Abbaspour, Majid (Supervisor)
Abstract
Analysis of hydrodynamic model of sea wave problems has very good conformity with boundary element method (BEM). Because, the governing equation of many sea wave problems is potential equation which is the base of BEM. In this research, after some explanation about BEM and its application in fluid mechanics, a new composition of elements on the discretized boundary is introduced in favor of increasing the precision. In this method, the constant elements are used in corner elements and the linear elements are used in other elements. This issue is validated by comparing with analytical solution. In addition, free surface flow with porous medium in the fluid is investigated in sloshing 2D...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Abolhassani, Hassan (Supervisor)
Abstract
In the last decade, Intrusion Detection Systems has attracted attention due to their importance in network security, but still they've shortcomings. Generating a lot of low level alerts is the main problem. Many of these alerts are actually false positives. One suggested solution is Alert Correlation Analysis. Because of false positives alert correlation techniques are not able to build accurate scenarios, but the accuracy of alerts can be verified with the aid of the information logged in the host systems. In this dissertation after surveying the current alert correlation techniques, a model will be introduced to effectively verify the generated alerts and to apply correlation techniques to...
Fabrication of Ferrofluidic Micropump
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Shafii, Mohammad Behshad (Supervisor) ; Saidi, Mohammad Said (Supervisor) ; Saidi, Mohammad Hassan (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this project, two Ferrofluidic micropumps that do not need any mechanical moving parts are presented. These micropumps are including simple microchannels containing magnetic fluid plugs that are used as flow actuator and the on/off valve. Using external magnetic field actuation in this type of micropumps, the magnetic fluid would have continuous motion in a channel with micrometer dimensions that would provide the main fluid to be pumped. Although the plug of magnetic fluid has surface contact with operative fluid, but considering its specific features, it would not compine with the pumping fluid. These micropumps may be used to pump the fluids or gases. The outcomes of the investigation...

Abstract
Unglazed Transpired Solar Collectors, recently called "Solar Wall", are known as the most efficient solar air heating system for the past two decades. The equator faced collector which is installed in this system has many tiny perforations to suck in the air with a fan and gain the absorbed heat by the collector. Convection and Radiation heat losses from the absorber to surrounding and other design factors have different influents to the heat gain of this system. In this study, Continuity, Momentum and Energy equations are written with proper boundary conditions, solved with computational fluid dynamics methods and validated in order to model Solar Wall system. Thus we could compare all...

Vortex-Induced Vibrations of Free Spanning Pipelines
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Ghoreishi, Reza (Supervisor) ; Abbaspour, Majid (Supervisor)
Abstract
When a submarine pipeline is laid, pipeline spans may exist due to the unevenness of the seabed. Such pipeline spans when exposed to currents, may undergo vortex-induced vibration (VIV). As the flow velocity increases, the cross-flow oscillation begins to occur and vortex shedding frequency may approach the natural frequency of the pipe span. Amplified response due to resonance between the vortex shedding frequency of the free span may cause fatigue damage. Thus, the determination of the critical allowable span length under the various environments becomes the most challenging areas in the offshore industry. A substantial research effort related to various aspects of VIV and free span...

Energy-Efficient Reliable Data Aggregation in Wireless Sensor Neworks
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Hemmatyar, Ali Mohammad Afshin (Supervisor)
Abstract
Data aggregation is an efficient method to conserve energy by reducing packet transmissions in Wireless Sensor Networks. However, providing end-to-end data reliability is a major challenge when the network uses data aggregation. In this case a packet loss can miss a complete subtree of values, so greatly affect final results. Data transmission in multiple paths can tolerate this problem, but it may incur some computational error for duplicate-sensitive aggregates when aggregating individual sensor values multiple times. In this thesis, we have proposed a reliable data Aggregation protocol which uses the available path redundancy to deliver a correct aggregate result to the sink with a high...
