Experimental and Analytical Investigation of Elastic-Plastic Behavior of Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sajadi, Banafshe (Author) ; Naghdabadi, Reza (Supervisor) ; Asghari, Mohsen (Supervisor)
In this thesis, we aim to study the elastic-plastic behavior of short fiber reinforced composites experimentally and analytically. The experimental investigation is applied to glass fiber-polypropylene composites (PP/GF). The samples are produced by injection process with maximum temperature of 190C. Fibers are randomly oriented in this procedure of fabrication. The samples are tested in tension, and the mechanical strength is measured by changes in fiber content. The Young's modulus is also investigated in these experiments. Also in this thesis, an analytical model for calculation of Young’s modulus of fiber reinforced composite materials is proposed. In this analysis a displacement field is...

Elasticity of DNA Molecule The Role of Anisotropy, Asymmetry and Nonlocal Interactions

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Eslami Mosallam, Behrouz (Author) ; Ejtehadi, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
The DNA Molecule carries genetic information in almost all living organisms. The information coded on DNA is an instruction which organizes and conducts all living activities of the living organism. The role of DNA in biological processes is so fundamental that life, as we know, is not possible without DNA. Therefore, studying the biological properties of DNA is crucial for understanding the nature of life. In biological conditions, DNA molecule can be found in highly packed configurations. Since the DNA is a rather stiff molecule, the formation of these configurations cost a considerable amount of energy. The elasticity of DNA plays an important role here. The important question is: how...

Solving the Path Planning Problem in 3D Continues Space with Application in Elastic Manipulator

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Turani, Amir Abbas (Author) ; Asghari, Mohsen (Supervisor)
Nowadays, robots are become more common in many important applications, such as academic and industrial issues. One of the most important robots are Multi-Arm manipulators which are used in many application such as moving objects, coloring, automatic welding and etc. Working with this kind of robots needs some vital attentions like planning their moving path. It is Because of the large number of obstacles that they face with in the path. Therefore, not only robots are not allowed to collision with themselves, but also they must not touch the obstacles. In the other words, they need Path planning. Generally, the equations of these robots are nonlinear. Therefore, computers and numerical...

Concept Extraction of Sequential Patterns for Imitative Learning

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Arjomand Aghaee, Ehsan (Author) ; Bagheri Shouraki, Saeed (Supervisor)
The aim of this thesis is the concept extraction of sequential patterns for imitative learning for humanoid robots. In such a way that an existent that has the physical and cognitive similarities, begins to extract concepts and learns by observing the behavior of the other existent. In this project, it is assumed a humanoid robot that can understand the concepts such as hello, goodbye and different concepts and does the corresponding actions from the visual and auditory information. In this thesis, a new model has been presented to eliminate the improper and meaningless elasticity in patterns sequence, such as changes in accent or elasticity in movements. This model is called the fuzzy...

Investigation of Mechanical Properties of Healthy Red Blood Cells using Optical Tweezers

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Azadbakht, Ali (Author) ; Seyed Reihani, Nader (Supervisor) ; Moosavi-Movahhedi, Ali Akbar (Co-Advisor)
Red blood cells (RBC, erythrocytes) are cells with an average diameter of 8 microns, the thickness of 2-3 microns and the volume of 90 fl. The biconcave shape of red blood cells, together with cell membrane flexibility, enables them to pass the capillaries whose diameter is considerably less than 8 micrometers. Mechanical properties of RBC are related to their membrane and cytoskeleton, which consists of spectrin network. Optical tweezers is able to exert very precise forces to erythrocytes using beed as a handle. In this report, we studied mechanical properties of RBC such as elasticity and viscoelasticity using single trap optical tweezers with beads with antibody coated in order to attach...

Impact of Fuel Price Increase on Urban and Interstate Travel Demands

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Arfaei Yazdi Pour, Masoud (Author) ; Samimi, Amir (Supervisor)
This study evaluates the impact of fuel price increase on urban and interstate travel demands via the linear regression model. Indeed this study has two aims. First, analyze the effect of fuel price increase on travel demands of two modes of transit ridership (Subway and Bus Rapid Transit), and determine the cross elasticity of demands. To achieve the demands, the origin-destination matrix of each mode was obtained using automated fare collection data and the trip-chaining method. Second, examine the impact of fuel price increase on interstate travel demands and provide the elasticity of vehicle-kilometer traveled with respect to fuel price. The ordinary least-square method was used to...

Design of Fillet Welds in Plastic State

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ezzatnejad, Shahriyar (Author) ; Maleki, Shervin (Supervisor)
Nowadays, many structural engineers use fillet welds in their designs because of their high strength and affordability. In these welds, eccentric loadings either out-of-plane or in-plane create complex condition in welds from stress point of view. To determine the capacity of such fillet welds different methods have been proposed over time. For instance, the method approved by AISC is the Elastic method. This method when combined with load factors, as required by the LRFD design method, yields very conservative designs for fillet welds. Therefore, in this project, we try to propose the plastic method for welds under eccentric loadings. This method is more economical than the elastic method...
