Exergy Analysis of Turbochargen Systems in the Internal Combustion Engines

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Goudarzi, Amir (Author) ; Mozafari, Ali Asghar (Supervisor) ; Ali Ehiaee, Mahdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Thermodynamic analysis of a system is a method for recognizing the type of energy transmission between system and surrounding environment. It also helps to find how macroscopic properties of the system change during this process. This analysis is based on first and second laws of thermodynamic. The first law expresses conservation of energy and inspects quantity of energy transmission but doesn’t evaluate quality of energy. The second law expresses quality of energy and the ability of doing work. The analysis that uses both of the laws is named exergy analysis. By exergy analysis the place of useful energy losses in the system can be determined. In this research the exergy analysis of...

Effective Implementation of Wide-band Spectrum Sensing

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Golvaei, Mehran (Author) ; Shabany, Mahdi (Supervisor) ; Fakharzadeh, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Ever increasing demand for higher data rate in wireless communication in the face of limited or underutilized spectral resources has motivated the introduction of cognitive radio for dynamic access to spectrum. In dynamic spectrum access a new type of users called secondary users measure the spectrum to see if it is occupied by licensed users (primary users or PU). When channel is empty secondary users can use it to transmit signal. This approach is called spectrum sensing. Hidden PU problem can severely defect detection ability of non-cooperativ spectrum sensing systems. Cooperative spectrum sensing (CSS) uses spatial diversity of spectrum sensors to tackle this problem. There are two kinds...

Design and Implementation of a VLSI Architecture for Time and Frequency Synchronization in the LTE

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Golnari, Amene (Author) ; Shabany, Mahdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The long term evolution (LTE) standard is introduced and developed by the 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). OFDM systems, in spite of having many advantages such high performance in bandwidth usage, are very sensitive to inter carrier interference (ICI) as a drawback. In order to prevent ICI, the frequency offset, mainly caused by the miss-match between oscillators' frequency and also between the sampling frequency of the transmitter and the receiver, should be estimated and compensated. Frequency synchronization is a part of the tasks of a synchronizer. In this thesis, main tasks of a synchronizer are illustrated and...

Improvement in Distributed Storage by Using Network Coding

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Garshasbi, Javad (Author) ; Jafari Siavoshani, Mahdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Cloud and distributed storage systems can provide large-scale data storage and high data reliability by adding redundancy to data. Redundant data may get lost due to the instability of distributed systems such as hardware failures. In order to maintain data availability, it is necessary to regenerate new redundant data in another node, referred to as a newcomer and this process reffered to repair process. Repair process is expected to be finished as soon as possible, because the regeneration time can influence the data reliability and availability of distributed storage systems. In this context, the general objective is to minimize the volume of actual network traffic caused by such...

    Abstract
Continuous Blood Pressure monitoring can provide invaluable information about individuals’ health conditions. However, BP is conventionally measured using inconvenient cuff-based instruments, which prevents continuous BP monitoring. This work presents an efficient algorithm, based on the Pulse Arrival Time (PAT), for the continuous and cuff-less estimation of the Systolic Blood Pressure (SBP), Diastolic Blood Pressure (DBP), and Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP) values. The proposed framework estimates the BP values through processing vital signals and extracting two types of features, which are based on either physiological parameters or whole-based representation of vital signals. Finally, the...

To reduce these problems, there need to be an evaluation of the amplitude of the ground-borne vibrations. The goal in this study is creating a suitable finite difference model in order to predict the intensity of train induced vibrations propagating inside or on the surface of the soil using FLAC (Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua) software as well as assessing the effectiveness of recycled shredded tires in reducing the surface vibrations by using these material as the filler for vibration isolation trenches. The...

Preposition Semantic Analysis Via Persian Text Corpus

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Kowsarifard, Zahra (Author) ; Khosravizadeh, Parvaneh (Supervisor) ; Eslami, Moharram (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Prepositions are considered as frequent linguistic units whose role in computational linguistics cannot be neglected. These units are often thought to have no lexical meaning; moreover, it is a widely held belief that prepositions are solely used for sentence cohesion. On the other hand, in some cases the substitution of one particular preposition with another one would change the meaning of sentences.
The main question which is concerned in this thesis is “Whether prepositions should be regarded as meaningful units or semantically empty units?” In order to achieve this goal, the present study is conducted as a library research and a field research. In the library research, 1000...

Modal Identification of Non-classically Damped Linear Systems Using Wavelet Transform

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Kamali-Asl, Arash (Author) ; Ahmadizadeh, Mahdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Application of convolution-based transforms such as Fourier transform and wavelet transform are among the widely-used approaches in structural identification problems. These methods, however, are mostly based on a classical damping model for the structures. Hence, such methods cannot be used to accurately identify the modal properties of non-classically damped systems, such as structures equipped with energy dissipated devices, base isolated and multi-segment structures. In this study, complex-valued wavelet transform is used to identify the dynamic properties of structures with arbitrary damping models. This method is known to be able to identify the modal properties of highly damped...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Kafrashi, Fatemeh (Author) ; Jalali Heravi, Mahdi (Supervisor) ; Hormozinezhad, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Zinc oxide(ZnO) nanoparticles have been used in a wide-ranging of applications such as transparent UV protection, medical treatments, light emitting diodes, sensors and photovoltaic cells. Many applications of ZnO nanoparticles could be improved by changing the particle size, shape and morphology. In order to take advantage of the unique size dependent properties observed for ZnO anoparticles, knowledge of how particle growth can be controlled is required. As an alternative to transmittance electron microscopy (TEM), which is already used in the study of size and monodispersity of ZnO nanoparticles during synthesis, we proposed a simple spectrophotometric method coupled with chemometric...

    Abstract
Value at risk (VaR) is the maximum loss of the asset portfolio at the specified confidence level and certain time horizon. This tool is used to measure market risk and also used as a basis in determining financial standards for international financial instituation. Conditional Autoregressive Value at Risk models or CAViaR models introduced by Engle and Manganelli (2004). This models calculate VaR base on quantile regession approach and show some promising performance properties.
In order to propose a more accurate model for calcutating VaR , we develop CAViaR models by incorporating them with intraday information then we calculate VaR with this kind of models and CAViaR...

Verifying the Empirical Validity of the Trilemma using U.S. Monetary Shocks

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Karimi, Mahtab (Author) ; Barakchian, Mahdi (Supervisor) ; Joshaghani, Hosein (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
According to the impossible trinity, countries can only enjoy from two of the following choices simultaneously: fixed exchange rate, free capital flow and independent monetary policy. A part of the economics literature has tried to verify the theory empirically. Some of the researches like Klein and Shambugh(2015) has concluded that the trilemma is valid on the occasion of transferring the effect of base countries interest rate changes to other countries. On the other side, a few papers like Ray(2013) has shown that an independent monetary policy can just be obtained by a closed capital flow and a float exchange rate system can not necessarily give central banks the autonomy of monetary...
