Modeling and Optimization of Different Powertrain Configurations for a Specific Electric Vehicle
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Saadat Foumani, Mahmoud (Supervisor)
Abstract
In recent years passenger cars have been known as the main source of air pollution in urban areas. Despite all the research and efforts in minimizing the fuel consumption and emissions of internal combustion engines (ICE), this is merely a temporary solution. The permanent solution to overcome these disavantages is the use of electric vehicles (EV). The main downside of using electric vehicles is their short driving range. Multi-speed transmissions can be adopted to overcome this problem. Continuously variable transmissions (CVT) and infinitely variable transmissions (IVT) have been proven to enhance fuel economy in ICE vehicles and a great deal of research is being conducted to maximize...
Solid products characterization in a multi-step mineralization process
, Article Chemical Engineering Journal ; Vol. 252 , 2014 , Pages 210-219 ; ISSN: 13858947 ; Shayegan, J ; Sharratt, P ; Yeo, T. Y ; Bu, J

Abstract
In this paper, we describe a carbon dioxide mineralization process and its associated solid products. These solid products include amorphous silica, iron hydroxides and magnesium carbonates. These products were subjected to various characterization tests, and the results are published here. It was found that the iron hydroxides from this process can have different crystalline properties, and their formation depended very much on the pH of the reaction conditions. Different forms of magnesium carbonate were also obtained, and the type of carbonate precipitated was found to be dependent on the carbonation temperature. Hydromagnesite was obtained mainly at low temperatures, while dypingite was...

Abstract
The classical continuum theory not only underestimates the stiffness of microscale structures such as microbeams but is also unable to capture the size dependency, a phenomenon observed in these structures. Hence, the non-classical continuum theories such as the strain gradient elasticity have been developed. In this paper, a Timoshenko beam finite element is developed based on the strain gradient theory and employed to evaluate the mechanical behavior of microbeams used in microelectromechanical systems. The new beam element is a comprehensive beam element that recovers the formulations of strain gradient Euler–Bernoulli beam element, modified couple stress (another non-classical theory)...

Abstract
Dijet production has been measured in pPb collisions at a nucleon–nucleon centre-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. A data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35 nb−1 was collected using the Compact Muon Solenoid detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The dijet transverse momentum balance, azimuthal angle correlations, and pseudorapidity distributions are studied as a function of the transverse energy in the forward calorimeters (E4<|η|<5.2 T). For pPb collisions, the dijet transverse momentum ratio and the width of the distribution of dijet azimuthal angle difference are comparable to the same quantities obtained from a simulated pp reference and insensitive to E4<|η|<5.2 T. In...
Process optimization for mineral carbonation in aqueous phase
, Article International Journal of Mineral Processing ; Vol. 130 , July , 2014 , pp. 20-27 ; ISSN: 03017516 ; Shayegan, J ; Bu, J ; Yeo, T. Y ; Sharratt, P ; Sharif University of Technology
2014
Abstract
Carbon dioxide sequestration by a pH-swing carbonation process was considered in this work. A multi-step aqueous process is described for the fractional precipitation of magnesium carbonate and other minerals in an aqueous system at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. With the aim to achieve higher purity and deliver more valuable mineral products, the process was split into four steps. The first step consists of Mg leaching from the magnesium silicate in a stirred vessel using 1 M HCl at 80 °C, followed by a three step precipitation in reactors in sequence to remove Fe(OH)3, then Fe(OH)2 and other divalent ions, and finally MgCO3 nucleation and growth. Hydrated magnesium carbonate...
Optimizing a hybrid vendor-managed inventory and transportation problem with fuzzy demand: An improved particle swarm optimization algorithm
, Article Information Sciences ; Vol. 272 , July , 2014 , pp. 126-144 ; ISSN: 00200255 ; Sadeghi, S ; Niaki, S. T. A ; Sharif University of Technology
2014
Abstract
Vendor-managed inventory (VMI) is a popular policy in supply chain management (SCM) to decrease bullwhip effect. Since the transportation cost plays an important role in VMI and because the demands are often fuzzy, this paper develops a VMI model in a multi-retailer single-vendor SCM under the consignment stock policy. The aim is to find optimal retailers' order quantities so that the total inventory and transportation cost are minimized while several constraints are satisfied. Because of the NP-hardness of the problem, an algorithm based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) is proposed to find a near optimum solution, where the centroid defuzzification method is employed for...

Abstract
A search for excited quarks decaying into the γ + jet final state is presented. The analysis is based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb-1 collected by the CMS experiment in proton-proton collisions at √s=8TeV at the LHC. Events with photons and jets with high transverse momenta are selected and the γ + jet invariant mass distribution is studied to search for a resonance peak. The 95% confidence level upper limits on the product of cross section and branching fraction are evaluated as a function of the excited quark mass. Limits on excited quarks are presented as a function of their mass and coupling strength; masses below 3.5 TeV are excluded at 95% confidence...
Formulation of a nonlinear mathematical model to simulate accelerations of an AAMV in take-off and landing phases
, Article Ships and Offshore Structures ; 2014 ; ISSN: 17445302 ; Dakhrabadi, M. T ; Seif, M. S ; Sharif University of Technology
2014
Abstract
Aerodynamically alleviated marine vehicle (AAMV) is a high speed craft equipped with aerodynamic surfaces that operating in ground effect zone provides this craft with the ability to achieve much higher cruising speeds. Reducing the take-off mode of an AAMV is highly desirable. Additionally, it is seen where there is a considerable reserve thrust take-off can occur in the lower get-away speeds that shorten the take-off run and, therefore, is favourable. Accordingly, in this study an attempt has been made to develop a nonlinear mathematical model for an AAMV to simulate accelerations in take-off and landing phases, using semi-empirical equations mainly proposed for mono-hull high-speed craft,...
Kondo resonance from p-wave hybridization in graphene
, Article Journal of Physics Condensed Matter ; Vol. 26, Issue. 41 , 2014 ; SSN: 09538984m ; Tohyama, T ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
The p-wave hybridization in graphene present a distinct class of Kondo problem in pseudogap Fermi systems with bath density of states (DOS) ρ0(ε) ∝ |ε|. The peculiar geometry of substitutional and hollow-site ad-atoms, and effectively the vacancies allow for a p-wave form of momentum dependence in the hybridization of the associated local orbital with the Dirac fermions of the graphene host which results in a different picture than the s-wave momentum independent hybridization. For the p-wave hybridization function, away from the Dirac point we find closed-form formulae for the Kondo temperature TKwhich in contrast to the s-wave case is non-zero for any value of hybridization strength V of...
Impact of loss on the wave dynamics in photonic waveguide lattices
, Article Physical Review Letters ; Vol. 113, Issue. 12 , 2014 ; ISSN: 00319007 ; Weimann, S ; Jafari, K ; Nezhad, M. K ; Langari, A ; Bahrampour, A. R ; Eichelkraut, T ; Mahdavi, S. M ; Szameit, A ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
We analyze the impact of loss in lattices of coupled optical waveguides and find that, in such a case, the hopping between adjacent waveguides is necessarily complex. This results not only in a transition of the light spreading from ballistic to diffusive, but also in a new kind of diffraction that is caused by loss dispersion. We prove our theoretical results with experimental observations

Abstract
A search for supersymmetry through the direct pair production of top squarks, with Higgs (H) or Z bosons in the decay chain, is performed using a data sample of proton-proton collisions at s=8 TeV collected in 2012 with the CMS detector at the LHC. The sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.5 fb-1. The search is performed using a selection of events containing leptons and bottom-quark jets. No evidence for a significant excess of events over the standard model background prediction is observed. The results are interpreted in the context of simplified supersymmetric models with pair production of a heavier top-squark mass eigenstate t~2 decaying to a lighter top-squark mass...

Abstract
The ratio of the top-quark branching fractions R=B(t→Wb)/B(t→Wq), where the denominator includes the sum over all down-type quarks (q = b, s, d), is measured in the tt- dilepton final state with proton-proton collision data at s=8 TeV from an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb-1, collected with the CMS detector. In order to quantify the purity of the signal sample, the cross section is measured by fitting the observed jet multiplicity, thereby constraining the signal and background contributions. By counting the number of b jets per event, an unconstrained value of R=1.014±0.003(stat.)±0.032(syst.) is measured, in a good agreement with current precision measurements in electroweak and flavour...

Abstract
Constraints are presented on the total width of the recently discovered Higgs boson, ΓH, using its relative on-shell and off-shell production and decay rates to a pair of Z bosons, where one Z boson decays to an electron or muon pair, and the other to an electron, muon, or neutrino pair. The analysis is based on the data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2011 and 2012, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 5.1fb -1 at a center-of-mass energy s=7TeV and 19.7fb -1 at s=8TeV. A simultaneous maximum likelihood fit to the measured kinematic distributions near the resonance peak and above the Z-boson pair production threshold leads to an upper limit on the Higgs boson width of ΓH...
Uncontrolled disorder effects in fabricating photonic quantum simulators on a kagome geometry: A projected-entangled-pair-state versus exact- diagonalization analysis

Abstract
We propose a flexible numerical framework for extracting the energy spectra and photon transfer dynamics of a unit kagome cell with disordered cavity-cavity couplings under realistic experimental conditions. A projected-entangled pair state (PEPS) Ansatz to the many-photon wave function allows us to gain a detailed understanding of the effects of undesirable disorder in fabricating well-controlled and scalable photonic quantum simulators. The correlation functions associated with the propagation of two-photon excitations reveal intriguing interference patterns peculiar to the kagome geometry and promise at the same time a highly tunable quantum interferometry device with a signature for the...
Comparison of boundary slip for two variants of immersed boundary method in lattice Boltzmann framework
, Article Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications ; Vol. 404 , 2014 , Pages 200-216 ; ISSN: 03784371 ; Manzari, M. T ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
In this paper, the Immersed Moving Boundary-Lattice Boltzmann (IMB-LB) method is compared with the single relaxation time and multiple-relaxation-time versions of the Immersed Boundary-Lattice Boltzmann (IB-LB) method in terms of the amount of numerical velocity slip produced on solid boundaries. The comparisons are performed for both straight and curved boundaries based on the effects of thickness of virtual domain used in the IB method for the first time, and relaxation time parameter(s) of the LB method. For the straight boundaries, a shear flow problem is studied while for the curved boundaries, a falling circular cylinder in an infinite channel is investigated. First, sensitivities of...
Monotonic change-point estimation of multivariate Poisson processes using a multi-attribute control chart and MLE
, Article International Journal of Production Research ; Vol. 52, issue. 10 , Nov , 2014 , pp. 2954-2982 ; ISSN: 00207543 ; Khedmati, M ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
In this paper, a new multi-attribute T2 control chart is initially proposed to monitor multi-attribute processes based on a transformation technique. Then, the maximum likelihood estimator of a multivariate Poisson process change point is derived for unknown changes that are assumed to belong to a family of monotonic changes. Using extensive simulation experiments, the performance of the proposed change-point estimator is compared to the ones derived for step changes and linear-trend disturbances, when the true change types are step change, linear trends and multiple-step changes. We show when the type of the change is not known a priori, the proposed estimator is an appropriate choice,...

Abstract
Self compacting concrete (SCC), as an innovative construction material in concrete industry, offers a safer and more productive construction process due to favorable rheological performance which is caused by SCC's different mixture composition. This difference may have remarkable influence on the mechanical behavior of SCC as compared to normal vibrated concrete (NVC) in hardened state. Therefore, it is vital to know whether the use of all assumptions and relations that have been formulated for NVC in current design codes are also valid for SCC. Furthermore, this study presents an extensive evaluation and comparison between mechanical properties of SCC using current international codes and...

Abstract
Design and development of FGMs as the heat treatable materials for high-temperature environments with thermal protection require understanding of exact temperature and thermal stress distribution in the transient state. This information is primary tool in the design and optimization of the devices for failure prevention. Frequently FGMs are used in many applications that presumably produce thermal energy transport via wave propagation. In this study, transient non-Fourier temperature and associated thermal stresses in a functionally graded slab symmetrically heated on both sides are determined. Hyperbolic heat conduction equation in terms of heat flux is used for obtaining temperature...
