Probability and Causation: Based on Epistemological Approach

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Bagherboum, Mojdeh (Author) ; Azadegan, Ebrahim (Supervisor)
After Hume’s skeptical argument on the concept of causality and establishing the regularity theory of causation by him, it seemed that the regularity theory might not respond to irrelevance problems and spurious regularities. In the second half of the twentieth century, attempts were made, e.g. Hans Reichenbach's proposal of the “common cause principle,” for solving the problems of regularity theory which resulted in probabilistic approach to causal relationships. The importance of the common cause principle is that it has inspired the “Causal Markov Condition” which is the most fundamental condition for causal networks. The causal Markov condition states that a variable X is...

Stability Analysis of High Rise Structures Using the IDA Method

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Aghili, Amir (Author) ; Khaloo, Alireza (Supervisor)
The increased height of high-rise structures has made the effects of reduced stability a crucial factor in structural analysis and design. There are a variety of methods for analyzing the stability of high-rise structures. This thesis discusses nonlinear finite element method for analyzing the stability of a three-dimensional 50-storey concrete structure with a height of 150 meter using increment dynamic analysis (IDA). The IDA was first proposed by Bertero.v and it has been adopted in a variety of manners by researchers. In recent years, this method has been confirmed by EEMA. Moreover, FEMA350, FEMA351 and FEMA P695 guidelines have paid special attention to this method for determining...

A Primer to Bayesian Methods in Cryptanalysis

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nokhbeh Zaeem, Mohammad (Author) ; Daneshgar, Amir (Supervisor)
In this thesis, based on the model introduced in [Murphy et. al., Likelihood Estimation for Block Cipher Keys, 1995], we discuss the possibility of unifying the cryptanalysis methods. First, the model for cryptanalysis is discussed and explained by modelling several known statistical attack. In the end, using this model, we propose attacks more general than linear and differential methods

A Review of Quantum Uncertainty Principle and Some of Its Consequences

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zahedi, Mojtaba (Author) ; Rezakhani, Ali (Supervisor)
In quantum mechanics, every system is described by a state function. The state function determines the probability of different outcomes of a certain measurement which is performed on the physical system. The connection between uncertainties about different measurements is presented by inequalities best known as Heisenberg’s uncertainty inequality. In face, the uncertainty relations state that there exist incompatible measurements, to which the outcomes of measurements cannot be predicted simultaneously. Although the uncertainty relations can be inferred from mathematical formalism of quantum mechanics, there is a profound relationship with other aspects of physics. Here we investigate the...
