John Archibald Wheeler is one of the staunchest advocates of the idea that information is more fundamental than anything else in physics. In this paper, we examine the status of this idea summarized in Wheeler’s slogan ‘it from bit’ in the context of Bohmian Mechanics and spontaneous collapse models. We will argue that any question about the status of ‘it from bit’ crucially depends on the particular interpretation of these theories one favors. © 2019, Springer Nature B.V

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Abedini, Amin (Author) ; Ahmadian, M.T (Supervisor) ; Asghari, M (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In recent years, great attention has been devoted to the design of artificial arms. The most crucial problem in such a design is the trajectory of movement. In this paper, a seven degree of freedom arm is modeled and simulated. Also, the optimization method named “Imperialistic Competitive Algorithm” has been modified and better performance of the new version is presented. Energy optimization is performed based on trajectory of the arm with angular velocity, angular acceleration and joint angles using modified imperialistic competitive algorithm (ICA). Considering ICA as a fast optimization algorithm, it would be reasonable to use this algorithm for robotic purposes for online answering. The...

    Abstract
Selective laser sintering is a technique which uses a laser as the power source to sintering some selected points at a bed of powder in order to create a solid structure. In this research the SLS mechanisms of powder deposition is simulated and surface smoothness and layer density created by each mechanism is computed. For this purpose roller, blade and hopper mechanisms are simulated. For this simulation, polyamide 12 (PA2200) which is a common material is used. In this simulation at first powder specifications are extracted according to the references and for particle shape instead of using the spherical particle shape we use a certain shape that is more close to reality which created by...

Proposed Method for Selecting the Most Suitable Contractor Using Risk Analysis

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shakiba Zahed, Hadi (Author) ; Mortaheb, Momamad Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
At present, with some exceptions, the contracts are awarded based on the least proposed price. The records show that this method has not been successful especially for the infrastructure projects. In other words the projects awarded this way have been completed with time and cost overruns. Most of the times, such projects have not satisfied the stakeholders' expectations or have had problems during operation phase. The goal of this research is to suggest a method for selecting the most suitable contractor, considering the proposed price as well as incorporating the delay and other risks based on Contractors' actual past performance in the completed projects. Before selecting the Contractor,...

Jahn-Teller Effect in Diamond Vacancy Under Stress

    , M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology monfared, Mohammad (Author) ; Vesaghi, M. A (Supervisor) ; Babamoradi, M (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Electron states of diamond vacancy under stress were studied theoretically. The generalized Hubbard model is used to calculate the electrons energy levels. The results shows that the degeneracy of some levels (T, with triple space degeneracy) reduced to levels with lower degeneracy (E, with double space degeneracy and A, without degeneracy). Besides this spiting of degeneracy the energy of all states changed and therefore the transition energy between these states changed too. Jahn-Teller effect was observed

γ' Precipitate dissolution during heat treatment of nimonic 115 superalloy

    Abstract
In precipitation hardenable materials, it is desirable to determine the precipitate dissolution temperature for homogenizing the microstructure by controlling the size and distribution of the precipitates. In this research, differential thermal analysis, dilatometry technique, heat treatments followed by microstructure evaluation were used to determine the -γ' dissolution temperature of Nimonic 115. It is assumed that the variation of enthalpy is governed by the changes in y volume fraction and γ concentration with time and temperature, and any contribution of the coarsening of γ' is neglected. The values obtained for the solvus temperature of γ precipitates by the three methods are all in...

    Abstract
We study a new class of visibility problems based on the notion of α-visibility. Given an angle α and a collection of line segments in the plane, a segment t is said to be α-visible from a point p, if there exists an empty triangle with one vertex at p and the side opposite to p on t such that the angle at p is α. In this model of visibility, we study the classical variants of point visibility, weak and complete segment visibility, and the construction of the visibility graph. We also investigate the natural query versions of these problems, when α is either fixed or specified at query time

    Abstract
Introduction: Antimicrobial peptides are potential therapeutics as anti-bacteria, anti-viruses, anti-fungi, or anticancers. However, they suffer from a short half-life and drug resistance which limit their long-term clinical usage. Methods: Herein, we captured the encapsulation of antimicrobial peptide HA-FD-13 into boron nitride nanotube (BNNT) (20,20) and its release due to subsequent insertion of BNNT (14,14) with molecular dynamics simulation. Results: The peptide-BNNT (20,20) van der Waals (vdW) interaction energy decreased to −270 kcal·mol−1 at the end of the simulation (15 ns). However, during the period of 0.2–1.8 ns, when half of the peptide was inside the nanotube, the...

    {k, r - k}-Factors of r-Regular Graphs

    Abstract
    For a set S of positive integers, a spanning subgraph F of a graph G is called an S-factor of G if degF(x) ∈ S for all vertices x of G, where degF(x) denotes the degree of x in F. We prove the following theorem on {a, b}-factors of regular graphs. Let r ≥ 5 be an odd integer and k be either an even integer such that 2 ≤ k < r/2 or an odd integer such that r/3 ≤ k < r/2. Then every r-regular graph G has a {k, r-k}-factor. Moreover, for every edge e of G, G has a {k, r-k}-factor containing e and another {k, r-k}-factor avoiding e

synergistic toughening in ternary silica/hollow glass spheres/epoxy nanocomposites

    Abstract
Herein, the fracture toughness of ternary epoxy systems containing nanosilica and hollow glass microspheres (HGMS) is investigated. The experimental measurements reveal synergistic fracture toughness in some hybrid compositions: The incorporation of 10 phr of HGMS and nanosilica alone modify the fracture toughness of epoxy by 39% and 91%, respectively. However, use of 10 phr hybrid modifier can enhance the fracture toughness of the resin up to 120%. Observations reveal different toughening mechanisms for the blends i.e., plastic deformation for silica nanoparticles and crack bifurcation for HGMS. Both of these toughening mechanisms additively contribute to the synergism in ternary epoxies
