Analysis of strain rate sensitivity of ultrafine-grained AA1050 by stress relaxation test

    , Article Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A: Physical Metallurgy and Materials Science ; Volume 45, Issue 12 , November 2014 , Pages 5442-5450 Mohebbi, M. S ; Akbarzadeh, A ; Kim, B. H ; Kim, S. K ; Sharif University of Technology
    November 2014
    Abstract
Commercially pure aluminum sheets, AA 1050, are processed by accumulative roll bonding (ARB) up to eight cycles to achieve ultrafine-grained (UFG) aluminum as primary material for mechanical testing. Optical microscopy and electron backscattering diffraction analysis are used for microstructural analysis of the processed sheets. Strain rate sensitivity (m-value) of the specimens is measured over a wide range of strain rates by stress relaxation test under plane strain compression. It is shown that the flow stress activation volume is reduced by decrease of the grain size. This reduction which follows a linear relation for UFG specimens, is thought to enhance the required effective (or...

The effect of aging on the fracture characteristics and ductility of self-compacting concrete

    , Article Materials and Design ; Volume 55 , March 2014 , Pages 937-948 Beygi, M. H. A ; Kazemi, M. T ; Nikbin, I. M ; Vaseghi Amiri, J ; Sharif University of Technology
    March 2014
    Abstract
Good knowledge of fracture parameters and cracking behavior of self-compacting concrete (SCC) from early ages until the SCC becomes mature plays an important role in design of SCC structure and also in evaluation of durability and consequently prevention of damage. In this paper, variation of fracture parameters and corresponding ductility behavior of SCC at different ages (e.g. 3days, 7days, 28days and 90days) for SCC mixes with w/c ratios of 0.45 and 0.65 have been experimentally studied. To do so, three-point bending tests were carried out on 120 notched beams. Then, size effect method (SEM) and work of fracture method (WFM) were applied to interpret the results. The results of analyses...

Effect of hot extrusion on wear properties of Al-15wt.% Mg2Si in situ metal matrix composites

    , Article Materials and Design ; Volume 53 , January 2014 , Pages 774-781 Soltani, N ; Jafari Nodooshan, H. R ; Bahrami, A ; Pech-Canul, M. I ; Liub, W ; Wub, G ; Sharif University of Technology
    January 2014
    Abstract
Al-15wt.% Mg2Si composites were prepared by in situ casting and characterized in wear tests. Previous to the extrusion of specimens at 470°C - varying extrusion ratio (7.4, 14.1 and 25), the as-cast composites were homogenized at 500°C for 5h, followed by slow furnace cooling. The microstructure, hardness and sliding wear behavior were characterized for both, the as-cast and hot extruded composites. Results show that increasing the extrusion ratio causes a significant improvement in hardness and wear resistance. This is ascribed to the observed decrease in average size and better distribution of Mg2Si particles, in tandem with a remarkable decrease in porosity percentages, which goes from...

Simply decoded efficient full-rate space-time block codes over correlated Rician fading channels

    , Article IET Communications ; Volume 8, Issue 10 , 3 July 2014 , Pages 1684-1695 Kuhestani, A ; Pilaram, H ; Mohammadi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    3 July 2014
    Abstract
A novel technique is presented to design efficient full-rate space-time block codes (STBCs) over correlated Rician fading channels. The authors first derive a formula for the achievable information rate of a linear dispersion coded multi-input single-output system as a function of correlation at the transmitter in a Rician fading channel. In addition, the authors obtain the bit-error-rate (BER) equations for this system, when multiple phase shift keying and multiple quadrature amplitude modulation schemes are used at the transmitter. Therefore with regard to derived formulae and using a genetic algorithm, a method is presented to construct STBCs over correlated Rician fading channels. The...

Effect of nanofluid treatment on water sensitive formation to investigate water shock phenomenon, an experimental study

    , Article Journal of Dispersion Science and Technology ; Volume 35, Issue 7 , 21 May 2014 , Pages 889-897 Habibi, A ; Heidari, M. A ; Al-Hadrami, H ; Al-Ajmi, A ; Al-Wahaibi, Y ; Ayatollahi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    21 May 2014
    Abstract
Permeability reduction in porous media as a result of frail and tenuous fine particles migration would decrease the productivity index in the subterranean reservoirs. During reservoir stimulation by injecting fluids into the reservoir, as the salinity condition of the formation brine changes, fine particles initiate the triggering process. In this study, MgO-based nanofluid as a fines fixation agent was stably prepared based on the particle size distribution and characterized through transmission electron microscopy analysis. Afterward, several core flooding tests were performed using Berea sandstone cores to study the effect of nanofluid injection on fines fixation in the water shock...

CoPA: Cold page awakening to overcome retention failures in STT-MRAM Based I/O Buffers

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems ; Volume 33, Issue 10 , 2022 , Pages 2304-2317 ; 10459219 (ISSN) Hadizadeh, M ; Cheshmikhani, E ; Rahmanpour, M ; Mutlu, O ; Asadi, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Performance and reliability are two prominent factors in the design of data storage systems. To achieve higher performance, recently storage system designers use DynamicDynamic RAMRAM (DRAM)-based buffers. The volatility of DRAM brings up the possibility of data loss and data inconsistency. Thus, a part of the main storage is conventionally used as the journal area to be able of recovering unflushed data pages in the case of power failure. Moreover, periodically flushing buffered data pages to the main storage is a common mechanism to preserve a high level of reliability. This scheme, however, leads to a considerable increase in storage write traffic, which adversely affects the performance....

Quick generation of SSD performance models using machine learning

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Emerging Topics in Computing ; Volume 10, Issue 4 , 2022 , Pages 1821-1836 ; 21686750 (ISSN) Tarihi, M ; Azadvar, S ; Tavakkol, A ; Asadi, H ; Sarbazi Azad, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    IEEE Computer Society  2022
    Abstract
Increasing usage of Solid-State Drives (SSDs) has greatly boosted the performance of storage backends. SSDs perform many internal processes such as out-of-place writes, wear-leveling, and garbage collection. These operations are complex and not well documented which make it difficult to create accurate SSD simulators. Our survey indicates that aside from complex configuration, available SSD simulators do not support both sync and discard requests. Past performance models also ignore the long term effect of I/O requests on SSD performance, which has been demonstrated to be significant. In this article, we utilize a methodology based on machine learning that extracts history-aware features at...

    Abstract
Low power consumption, real-time computing, and high reliability are three key requirements/design objectives of real-time embedded systems. The standby-sparing technique can improve system reliability while it might increase the temperature of the system beyond safe limits. In this paper, we propose a thermal-aware standby-sparing (TASS) technique that aims at maximizing the Quality of Service (QoS) of soft real-time tasks, which is defined as a function of the finishing time of running tasks. The proposed technique tolerates permanent and transient faults for multicore real-time embedded systems while meeting the Thermal Safe Power (TSP) as the core-level power constraint, which avoids...

    Water treatment using stimuli-responsive polymers

    , Article Polymer Chemistry ; Volume 13, Issue 42 , 2022 , Pages 5940-5964 ; 17599954 (ISSN) Abousalman Rezvani, Z ; Roghani Mamaqani, H ; Riazi, H ; Abousalman Rezvani, O ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Water treatment is a process used to eliminate or reduce chemical and biological contaminants that are potentially harmful to the water supply for human use. Stimuli-responsive polymers are a new category of smart materials used in water treatment via a stimuli-induced purification process and subsequent regeneration of the polymers. Stimuli-responsive polymers dynamically change their physico-chemical properties upon environmental changes. They can undergo shrinkage or expansion, alter their optical properties, and change their electrical characteristics depending on the applied stimuli. In this context, various stimuli-responsive polymer systems such as self-assembled nanostructures,...

    Abstract
The thermal energy received by each surface of an Earth-orbiting satellite strongly depends on its position and orientation. In this sense, simultaneous orbit and attitude estimation (SOAE) using the surface temperature data has been focused in the present study. The Earth infrared (IR) radiation and the Earth's top-of-atmosphere (TOA) albedo are two key sources of radiation affecting the satellite surface temperature rate. The Earth's radiation information has been monitored for the past two decades by the Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) project, producing a comprehensive set of Earth radiation budget (ERB) data for climate, weather and applied science research. The...

    Abstract
This research investigates a rotary disk with variable cross-section and incompressible hyperelastic material with functionally graded properties in large hyperelastic deformations. For this purpose, a power relation has been used to express the changes in cross-section and properties of hyperelastic material. So that (m) represents the changes in cross-section and (n) represents the manner of changes in material properties. The constants used for hyperelastic material have been obtained from experimental data. The obtained equations have been solved for different m, n, and (angular velocity) values, and the values of radial stresses, tangential stresses, and elongation have been compared....

    Abstract
Natural Gas Distribution Networks (NGDNs) are complex infrastructure systems that play an essential role in ensuring the welfare and prosperity of many communities by serving their residential, commercial, industrial, and transportation sectors. Earthquakes can damage the critical components of NGDNs and disrupt their services. The disruption of NGDN services can lead to significant economic and social losses. These losses can be mitigated by adopting appropriate resilience enhancement measures. This study puts forward a probabilistic framework to quantify the seismic resilience of NGDNs. This framework comprises multiple interconnected probabilistic models that work in harmony to...

    Abstract
This research studies the effect of glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars as compressive reinforcement in reinforced concrete (RC) beam members. Three singly and six doubly reinforced GFRP-RC beams were tested under a four-point loading configuration. The effect of compressive reinforcement on the load-bearing capacity, ductility, stiffness, and failure mode is determined. Also, the compressive performance of GFRP bars is evaluated by testing GFRP-RC cylinders. According to the results, GFRP bars in compression had a limited contribution to enhancing flexural strength, and the maximum increment in the flexural capacity of doubly reinforced beams compared to singly reinforced specimens...

Application of the Maxwell-Stefan theory in modeling gas diffusion experiments into isolated oil droplets by water

    , Article Physics of Fluids ; Volume 34, Issue 11 , 2022 ; 10706631 (ISSN) Mirazimi, S ; Rostami, B ; Ghazanfari, M. H ; Khosravi, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
We have used the Maxwell-Stefan diffusion theory to model the mass transfer between tertiary-injected gas and residual oil blocked by water, in order to predict the time required for the rupture of the water barrier due to oil swelling. We have also designed and conducted a set of visualization micromodel experiments on various pure and multicomponent oil-gas systems to measure the water rupture time in tertiary gas injection processes. The experimental results show that the initial pressure and dimensions of the system, the oil and gas composition, and the gas solubility in water control the oil swelling process. The experimentally measured rupture times are then employed to evaluate the...

    Abstract
Since the discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012, detailed studies of its properties have been ongoing. Besides its mass, its width—related to its lifetime—is an important parameter. One way to determine this quantity is to measure its off-shell production, where the Higgs boson mass is far away from its nominal value, and relating it to its on-shell production, where the mass is close to the nominal value. Here we report evidence for such off-shell contributions to the production cross-section of two Z bosons with data from the CMS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. We constrain the total rate of the off-shell Higgs boson contribution beyond the Z boson pair production threshold,...

    Abstract
The reason for the increasing bioavailability and biocompatibility of the porous nanomaterials in the presence of different (bio)molecules is still unknown. The role of difference functional groups and their interactions with the potential bioavailability and biocompatibility is of great importance. To investigate the potential contribution of the electronic effects (especially on the surface of the porous nanomaterials) on their biomedical behavior, a series of surface-decorated green ZnCr-layered double hydroxide (LDH) porous nanocarriers is developed as a non-viral vector. Different conjugations investigated these porous LDHs for optimizing and minimizing the cytotoxicity for targeted...

A probabilistic approach to mid-term conflict detection with accuracy estimate

    Abstract
This paper describes an approach to mid-term probabilistic conflict detection between two aircraft flying at the same altitude. The key distinguishing feature of the proposed method is that it analytically estimates the conflict probability, in the presence of a fully correlated wind field. The method uses a two-step approach. First, the mean and the covariance of the aircraft relative position are computed analytically. Then, the conflict probability is estimated such that a desired level of accuracy is obtained. Numerical results, conducted using a simulator incorporating a fully correlated wind field model, show the effectiveness of the approach versus the competitors. Finally,...
