, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Tavakkoli, Mohammad (Author) ; Taghikhani, Vahid (Supervisor) ; Pishvaie, Mahmoud Reza (Supervisor) ; Masihi, Mohsen (Co-Advisor) ; Chapman, Walter (Co-Advisor) ; Panuganti, Sai (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
In the upstream asphaltene flow assurance community, both academics and industries are actively involved to predict the asphaltene deposit profile in wellbores and pipelines. The main objective of this study is to contribute to the thermodynamic and transport modeling of asphaltene in order to predict its precipitation, aggregation and deposition. For a better knowledge of the flow properties of asphaltene containing crude oils, it is necessary to understand how asphaltene affect the rheological properties. In this work, the information on such rheological properties of oil-asphaltene slurry systems is provided. The results of rheological experiments for two Iranian crude oils show that the...

    Abstract
The dearth of efficient, robust, and economical electrocatalysts for water oxidation is dubiously the key obstacle for renewable energy devices, so synthesis of efficient, and cost-effective metal-based water oxidation catalysts is vital. Herein, Co3O4, Co9S8 catalysts and their heterostructure Co3O4/Co9S8 were synthesized and evaluated as water oxidation electrocatalysts. The characterization of Co3O4, Co9S8, and Co3O4/Co9S8 electrocatalysts was performed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. The heterostructure Co3O4/Co9S8 (1.46 V) exhibited water oxidation electrocatalysis at extremely low onset potential compared to...

    Abstract
TiO2–graphene (TiO2–GR) nanocomposites were synthesized using photocatalytic reduction method. TiO2–GR nanocomposites were thereafter doped with noble metals (Pt and Pd) by chemical reduction of the corresponding cations. The samples were characterized by different techniques. The addition of GR to TiO2 decreases the crystalline size of TiO2 due to the homogeneous dispersion of the TiO2 nanoparticles on GR sheets and prevention of coagulation of TiO2 nanoparticles during synthesis process. In addition, the surface area of TiO2 was increased by addition of GR and deposition of noble metals which helps to prevent agglomeration of graphene sheets and TiO2 nanoparticles. Red shifts to the higher...

Development of Microorganisms with Improved Biosurfactant Activity

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Bagheri Lotfabad, Tayebe (Author) ; Roosta Azad, Reza (Supervisor) ; Rouholamini Najafabadi, Abdolhossein (Supervisor) ; Akbari Noghabi, Kambiz (Co-Advisor) ; Shahcheraghi, Fereshte (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
This thesis discusses the work on the production of a rhamnolipid-type biosurfactant by Pseudomonas aeruginosa MR01, its structural characterization and environmental applications. First, results from analytical approaches for screening of biosurfactant producers suggested the oil spreading method as the fastest, simplest and most consistent analytical method. The second part of the thesis describes the properties of the most efficient biosurfactant-producing bacteria isolated from oil fields in south of Iran and according to it’s biochemical characteristics and partial sequenced 16S rRNA gene affiliated with Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Time course study indicated that the maximum biosurfactant...

Estimation of Reservoir Performance Parameters Using Percolation Approach

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Sadeghnejad Limouei, Saeeid (Author) ; Masihi, Mohsen (Supervisor) ; Shojaei, Ali Akbar (Supervisor) ; Pishvaie, Mahmoud Reza (Co-Advisor) ; Rabert King, Peter (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
The conventional approach to investigate the reservoir performance is to build a detailed geological model, upscale it, and finally run flow simulation which is computationally very expensive. In addition, during the early stage of life of a reservoir, due to the lake of certain data, this method is usually based on analogues or rules of thumb and not detailed reservoir modelling. Therefore, there is a great incentive to produce much simpler physically-based methodologies. The main focus of this thesis is to use percolation approach to estimate the uncertainty in the reservoir properties. This method considers a hypothesis that the reservoir can be split into either permeable (i.e....

Microstructure and compressibility of SiC nanoparticles reinforced Cu nanocomposite powders processed by high energy mechanical milling [electronic resource]

    , Article Ceramics International ; Volume 40, Issue 1, Part A, January 2014, Pages 951–960 Akbarpour, M.R. (Mohammad Reza) ; Salahi, E ; Alikhani Hesari, F ; Simchi, A ; Kim, H. S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Cu/SiC nanocomposite powders with homogeneously distributed nanosize SiC particles were produced by high energy mechanical milling (MM). Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and micro-hardness and density measurements were performed to understand the effects of microstructure and hardness on compaction behavior during MM. The effects of SiC nanoparticle content and mechanical milling time on apparent density (AD) and tap density (TD) of the nanocomposite powders were systematically investigated. The Hausner ratio (HR), defined as TD to AD, were estimated to evaluate friction between the particles. Increasing MM duration and SiC content resulted...

    Abstract
Higher than a standard level, the humidity provides a suitable environment for the pathogenic microorganisms to grow and increases energy consumption for cooling, increasing greenhouse gas emissions. Desiccant air-conditioning (DAC) is an effective method to reduce humidity and energy simultaneously. Conventional desiccants are not suitable for use as a desiccant in building air conditioners, mainly because of high regeneration temperature and other issues such as limited equilibrium capacity and hydrothermal and cyclic instability. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a novel class of porous crystalline materials without the disadvantages of traditional desiccants. They benefit from a huge...

    Abstract
Background: Combating viral hepatitis is part of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and WHO has put forth hepatitis B elimination targets in its Global Health Sector Strategy on Viral Hepatitis (WHO-GHSS) and Interim Guidance for Country Validation of Viral Hepatitis Elimination (WHO Interim Guidance). We estimated the global, regional, and national prevalence of hepatitis B virus (HBV), as well as mortality and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) due to HBV, as part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019. This included estimates for 194 WHO member states, for which we compared our estimates to WHO elimination targets. Methods: The primary...
