Abstract
Functionally graded aluminum matrix composites (FGAMC) are new advanced materials with promising applications due to their unique characteristics in which composite nature is combined with graded structure. Different architectures of Al6061/SiCp composite laminates were fabricated by successive hot roll-bonding. For FGAMCs, two composite layers as outer strips and a layer of Al1050 as interlayer were applied. To investigate laminate toughness, the quasi-static three-point bending test was conducted in the crack divider orientation. Genetic programming as a soft computing technique was implemented to find mathematical correlations between architectural parameters and experimentally obtained...
Document Biped hopping control bazsed on spring loaded inverted pendulum model [electronic resource]
, Article Int. Journal of Humanoid Robotics ; Vol. 7, No. 2, pp. 263-280, 2010 ; Jafari, Farid ; Meghdari, Ali ; Sohrabpour, Saeed ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
Human running can be stabilized in a wide range of speeds by automatically adjusting muscular properties of leg and torso. It is known that fast locomotion dynamics can be approximated by a spring loaded inverted pendulum (SLIP) system, in which leg is replaced by a single spring connecting body mass to ground. Taking advantage of the inherent stability of SLIP model, a hybrid control strategy is developed that guarantees a stable biped locomotion in sagittal plane. In the presented approach, nonlinear control methods are applied to synchronize the biped dynamics and the spring-mass dynamics. As the biped center of mass follows the mass of the mass-spring model, the whole biped performs a...
Molecular dynamics simulation of manipulation of metallic nanoclusters on double-layer substrates [electronic resource]
, Article Physica E: Low-dimensional Systems and Nanostructures ; 2010, Vol. 42, No. 9, pp. 2364-2374 ; Meghdari, Ali ; Jalili, Nader ; Amiri, Farshid ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
Molecular dynamics simulations are carried out to investigate the manipulation of metallic clusters on double-layer surfaces. The system parts are made of transition metals. The conditions which are subjected to change in the tests are material combinations for cluster, main substrate and lubricant layer (adlayer). In addition to qualitative observations, two criteria which represent the particle deformation and substrate abrasion are utilized as evaluation tools and are computed for each case. Obtaining this sort of knowledge is highly beneficial for further experiments in order to be able to plan the conditions and routines, which guarantee better success in the manipulation process
Microstructure and mechanical properties of copper processed by twist extrusion with a reduced twist-line slope

Abstract
Pure copper processed by a twist extrusion process with a reduced twist-line slope is investigated. Twist extrusion is a severe plastic deformation technique which is promising for scale-up because it allows for processing of relatively large metallic bars. On the way to commercialization, decreasing costs associated with processing is critical for twist extrusion. As one of the measures, reducing the twist-line slope - an important geometrical feature of twist extrusion - can be advantageous in terms of processing costs. The current study seeks to elucidate effects of reducing the twist-line slope on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and their heterogeneity in the processed metal,...

Abstract
Optical tweezers are proven indispensable single-cell micro-manipulation and mechanical phenotyping tools. In this study, we have used optical tweezers for measuring the viscoelastic properties of human red blood cells (RBCs). Comparison of the viscoelastic features of the healthy fresh and atorvastatin treated cells revealed that the drug softens the cells. Using a simple modeling approach, we proposed a molecular model that explains the drug-induced softening of the RBC membrane. Our results suggest that direct interactions between the drug and cytoskeletal components underlie the drug-induced softening of the cells. © 2018 Optical Society of America
Multi-scale Simulation of Protein Corona Formation at Nano-bio Interface in the Presence of Different Metabolites
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Naghdabadi, Reza (Supervisor) ; Sohrabpour, Saeid (Supervisor) ; Montazeri Hadesh, Abbas (Co-Supervisor) ; Mahmoudi, Morteza (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
One of the most promising strategies for fighting cancer is the drug delivery process using synthetic nanoparticles. Once in biological milieu, the nanoparticle surfaces get covered with a layer of biomolecules called the “Protein Corona”. The protein corona formation changes the nanoparticles interaction with the human body dictating a new fate for them. The protein corona composition is not only dependent on the nanoparticle itself, but also it is affected by the health condition of patients as recently discovered through the experimental studies. Here, the effect of disease on the protein corona formation is discussed through the molecular dynamics simulations. A multiscale simulation...

Abstract
In this study, we explored the growth kinetics of the Al-Fe intermetallic (IM) layer at the joint interface of the St-12/Al-5083 friction stir lap welds during post-weld annealing treatment at 350, 400 and 450 C for 30 to 180 min. Optical microscope (OM), field emission gun scanning electron microscope (FEG-SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) were employed to investigate the structure of the weld zone. The thickness and composition of the IM layers were evaluated using image analysis system and electron back-scatter diffraction (EBSD), respectively. Moreover, kernel average misorientation (KAM) analysis was performed to evaluate the level of stored energy in the as-welded state....

Abstract
Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) are increasingly used in medical applications, such as targeting delivery and imaging. In the future, patients are more likely to be exposed to pharmaceutical products containing such particles. The study of toxicity of SPIONs has become of great importance in recent years, although the published data in this arena is limited. The aim of the present work is to investigate the cytotoxicity of SPIONs and the effect of the particles on the cell medium components. For this purpose, uncoated and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) coated SPIONs with narrow size distribution were synthesized via a well-known coprecipitation method. The mouse fibroblast cell...

Abstract
A double burden of malnutrition occurs when individuals, household members or communities experience both undernutrition and overweight. Here, we show geospatial estimates of overweight and wasting prevalence among children under 5 years of age in 105 low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) from 2000 to 2017 and aggregate these to policy-relevant administrative units. Wasting decreased overall across LMICs between 2000 and 2017, from 8.4% (62.3 (55.1–70.8) million) to 6.4% (58.3 (47.6–70.7) million), but is predicted to remain above the World Health Organization’s Global Nutrition Target of <5% in over half of LMICs by 2025. Prevalence of overweight increased from 5.2% (30 (22.8–38.5)...

Abstract
The safe, highly effective measles vaccine has been recommended globally since 1974, yet in 2017 there were more than 17 million cases of measles and 83,400 deaths in children under 5 years old, and more than 99% of both occurred in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs)1–4. Globally comparable, annual, local estimates of routine first-dose measles-containing vaccine (MCV1) coverage are critical for understanding geographically precise immunity patterns, progress towards the targets of the Global Vaccine Action Plan (GVAP), and high-risk areas amid disruptions to vaccination programmes caused by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)5–8. Here we generated annual estimates of routine childhood...
