    Abstract
In dictionary learning, a desirable property for the dictionary is to be of low mutual and average coherences. Mutual coherence is defined as the maximum absolute correlation between distinct atoms of the dictionary, whereas the average coherence is a measure of the average correlations. In this paper, we consider a dictionary learning problem regularized with the average coherence and constrained by an upper-bound on the mutual coherence of the dictionary. Our main contribution is then to propose an algorithm for solving the resulting problem based on convexly approximating the cost function over the dictionary. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach has higher...

Using Numerical Simulation in the Design and Analysis of Spiral PEM Fuel Cells

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Arian Nazar, Mohammad Sadegh (Author) ; Kazem Zadeh Hannani, Siamak (Supervisor) ; Taghizadeh Manzari, Mehrdad (Supervisor) ; Roshandel, Ramin (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
The gas flow field geometry influences the transport phenomena inside PEMFCs and hence affecting their overall performance. Radial force and secondary flows resulting from curvature of the spiral channels in PEMFCs can improve mass transport limits and so does to their overall performance. Studying the effects of curvature of spiral channels on fuel cell performance and comparing them with similar designs is the aim of this thesis. The geometries are generated using concentric Archimedes’ spirals and categorized as axial or radial depending on the direction of the vector perpendicular to their MEA . Each category has five geometries which are the result of branching the main channel into...

    Abstract
Mechanical ventilation (MV) can result in long-term brain impairments that are resistant to treatment. The mechanisms underlying MV-induced brain function impairment remain unclear. Since nasal airflow modulates brain activity, here we evaluated whether reinstating airflow during MV could influence the memory performance of rats after recovery. Rats were allocated into two study groups: one group received rhythmic air-puff into the nasal cavity during MV and a control group that underwent ventilation without air-puff. During MV, air-puffs induced time-locked event potentials in OB, mPFC and vHPC and significantly increased the oscillatory activity at the air-puff frequency. Furthermore, in...

Allergic rhinitis impairs working memory in association with drop of hippocampal – Prefrontal coupling

    , Article Brain Research ; Volume 1758 , 2021 ; 00068993 (ISSN) Salimi, M ; Ghazvineh, S ; Nazari, M ; Dehdar, K ; Garousi, M ; Zare, M ; Tabasi, F ; Jamaati, H ; Salimi, A ; Barkley, V ; Mirnajafi Zadeh, J ; Raoufy, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a chronic inflammatory disease frequently associated with a deficit in learning and memory. Working memory is an important system for decision making and guidance, which depends on interactions between the ventral hippocampus (vHipp) and the prelimbic prefrontal cortex (plPFC). It is still unclear whether AR influences the activity and coupling of these brain areas, which consequently may impair working memory. The current study aimed to examine alterations of the vHipp-plPFC circuit in a rat model of AR. Our results show decreased working memory performance in AR animals, accompanied by a reduction of theta and gamma oscillations in plPFC. Also, AR reduces...

    Abstract
Zamin artificial life model is designed to be a general purpose environment for researches on evolution of learning methods, living strategies and complex behaviors and is used in several studies thus far. As a main target for Zamin's design has been its expandability and ease of problem definition, a new agent based structure for this artificial world is introduced in this paper, which is believed to be much easier to use and extend. In this new model, all control and world running processes are done by agents. Therefore, any change in world processes does not require recoding the main engine and can be done just by altering the behavior of one or some agents. To have an easier interface...

    Abstract
Anxiety is prevalent in asthma, and is associated with disease severity and poor quality of life. However, no study to date provides direct experimental evidence for the effect of allergic inflammation on the structure and function of medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and amygdala, which are essential regions for modulating anxiety and its behavioral expression. We assessed the impact of ovalbumin (OVA)-induced allergic inflammation on the appearance of anxiety-like behavior, mPFC and amygdala volumes using MRI, and the mPFC-amygdala circuit activity in sensitized rats. Our findings exhibited that the OVA challenge in sensitized rats induced anxiety-like behavior, and led to more activated...

    Abstract
A passive universal image steganalysis method is proposed that is shown to be of higher detection accuracy than existing truly blind steganalysis methods including Farid's and the WAM. This is achieved by improving some weaknesses of Farid's steganalysis scheme in feature extraction, that is, instead of deriving an over-determined equation system for each sub band of the wavelet decomposition, the sub bands are divided into overlapping blocks and an over-determined equation system is constructed for each block. To guarantee the existence of finite answers, the over-determined equation systems are solved in a way different from Farid's by using Moore-Penrose pseudo-inverse concept. Further...

    Abstract
The purpose of dictionary learning problem is to learn a dictionary D from a training data matrix Y such that Y ≈ DX and the coefficient matrix X is sparse. Many algorithms have been introduced to this aim, which minimize the representation error subject to a sparseness constraint on X. However, the dictionary learning problem is non-convex with respect to the pair (D,X). In a previous work [Sadeghi et al., 2013], a convex approximation to the non-convex term DX has been introduced which makes the whole DL problem convex. This approach can be almost applied to any existing DL algorithm and obtain better algorithms. In the current paper, it is shown that a simple modification on that approach...
