Improvement of a Steam Turbine Performance in a Combined Power Cycle Benefiting from Aerodynamics Solutions Applied on its Air-Cooled Condenser

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khorshidi Behzadi, Hamid Reza (Author) ; Darbandi, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Air-cooled condenser is widely used in thermal power plants as its main cooling system. However, the thermal capacity of air-cooled condensers reduces considerably in environmental wind drafts. So, the purpose of this study is to find practicable solutions to minimize the mal-performance of air-cooled condensers in windy conditions in either design or off-design conditions and consequently prevent the related steam turbines power reduction. The target combined cycle power plant consists of 4*160 MW steam turbines and 4 air-cooled condensers in its steam cycle part. This research presents two general and practical remedies, which are also applicable to many different powerplants irrespective...

Experimental Investigation of Using Phase Change Material Effect on Heat Transfer in Pool Boiling Process

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Behzadi, Mohammad Matin (Author) ; Shafii, Mohammad Behshad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the different methods of heat transfer, is pool boiling process. In this method, the operating fluid starts to boil on a hot surface whose temperature is more than boiling point of the fluid. Based on difference between between surface temperature and fluid boiling point, amount of heat flux from hot surface to fluid and fluid behavior will be different. In recent years, many researchers have tried to improve the amount of heat transfer in the boiling process by using various methods such as nanoparticle addition or using magnetic field.Latent heat is thermal energy released or absorbed, by a body or a thermodynamic system, during a constant-temperature process, usually a first-order...

The Study of the Effects of Different Parameters on Solar Chimneys Used in Ventilation

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Behzadi Saroukolaei, Mohammad (Author) ; Kazemzadeh Hannani, Siamak (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The purpose of present work is to study the effect of different parameters on the solar chimney used in ventilation. Experimental model and numerical model were used to achieve this goal. First, the model was numerically analyzed by Fluent software using Boussinesq approximation. The results of numerical modeling were validated by the empirical model. Finally, the numerical model can be used to investigate the effects of parameters which modeling is not possible by the empirical model for any reason. Experimental modeling was performed on a chimney with height and width of 180 and 62 cm, respectively. The thickness and angle of chimney in both experimental and numerical methods varied from 5...

Application of quasi-chemical models to liquid-liquid equilibrium calculations for ternary systems containing water, propionic acid and organic solvents

    , Article Fluid Phase Equilibria ; Volume 226, Issue 1-2 , 2004 , Pages 251-259 ; 03783812 (ISSN) Hashemi, Sh ; Ghotbi, C ; Taghikhani, V ; Behzadi, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    2004
    Abstract
Two different models based on Guggenheim's renormalized canonical partition function proposed by Wang and Vera, the generalized quasi-chemical model (GEM-QC) and the generalized regular solution model (GEM-RS), have been used in molecular form to correlate the liquid-liquid equilibrium (LLE) of experimental data for ternary systems containing water, propionic acid (PA) and organic solvents. Both the GEM-QC and the GEM-RS models have nine adjustable parameters for a ternary system, which are obtained from a least square fit of the models to the LLE experimental data. In this work the same assumptions made to develop the simplified GEM-RS model (GEM-RS2) by Wang and Vera, have been applied to...

Pyrolytic carbon coating for cytocompatibility of titanium oxide nanoparticles: a promising candidate for medical applications [electronic resource]

, Article Nanotechnology ; February 2012, Vol. 23, No. 4, PP. 045102 Behzadi, S. (Shahed) ; Imani, Mohammad ; Yousefi, Mohammad ; Galinetto, Pietro ; Simchi, Abdolreza ; Amiri, Houshang ; Stroeve, Pieter ; Mahmoudi, Morteza ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Nanoparticles for biomedical use must be cytocompatible with the biological environment that they are exposed to. Current research has focused on the surface functionalization of nanoparticles by using proteins, polymers, thiols and other organic compounds. Here we show that inorganic nanoparticles such as titanium oxide can be coated by pyrolytic carbon (PyC) and that the coating has cytocompatible properties. Pyrolization and condensation of methane formed a thin layer of pyrolytic carbon on the titanium oxide core. The formation of the PyC shell retards coalescence and sintering of the ceramic phase. Our MTT assay shows that the PyC-coated particles are cytocompatible at employed doses

Synthesis and Biocompatibility Evaluation of TiO2/Pyrolytic Carbon Core/Shell

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Behzadi, Shahed (Author) ; Simchi, Abdolreza (Supervisor) ; Imani, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Carbon-based thin films possess low friction coefficient, low surface roughness, chemical inertness and outstanding biocompatibility. In the present work, TiO2 nanoparticles were covered by a thin film of pyrolytic carbon (PyC) to provide a core-shell morphology. The PyC film was deposited by dehydrogenation of methane in a fluidized bed chemical vapour deposition (FBCVD) reactor at 1100 °C. The prepared specimens were characterized by various analytical methods including XRD, SEM, TEM, AFM, TGA and contact angle measurement techniques. Biocompatibility profiles of the resulting materials were evaluated using MTT and cell cycle assay. The results showed that the thin carbon film strongly...

Reducing CO2 emission from exhaust gases using molten carbonate fuel cells: a new approach

    , Article International Journal of Ambient Energy ; Volume 37, Issue 4 , 2016 , Pages 331-340 ; 01430750 (ISSN) Golzar, F ; Astaneh, M ; Roshandel, R ; Behzadi Forough, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The aim of this study is to couple molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) stack with integrated gasification combined cycle fed by refinery residues, to remove CO2 from gas turbine exhaust gases that have CO2 emission rate of 14,200 ton/year. By applying multi-objective optimisation (MOO) using genetic algorithm, the optimal values of operating load and the corresponding values of objective functions are obtained. The MOO of the MCFC system regarding two scenarios is performed. The first scenario is minimisation of cost of electricity (COE) and CO2 emission rate. Objective functions of the second scenario are the same as in the first scenario while CO2 tax is taken into account. Results show that...

    Abstract
An EOS based on the statistical associating fluid theory generalized to include potentials of variable range was applied to pure associating solvents (water, n-propanol, i-propanol, n-butanol, and n-pentanol) and more commonly encountered electrolyte solutions containing the ions Li+, Na+, K+, Ca++, Br--, Cl-, I-, OH-, and NO 3-. The model incorporated the Yukawa attraction potential for segment-segment interactions between solvent segments and also for the segment-ion interactions, and the non-restricted mean-spherical approximation to account for the long-range interactions between ionic species. The resulting model could correlate VLE for the pure solvents and binary solvent/salt mixtures...

Modeling electrolyte solutions with the SAFT-VR equation using Yukawa potentials and the mean-spherical approximation

    , Article Fluid Phase Equilibria ; Volume 236, Issue 1-2 , 2005 , Pages 241-255 ; 03783812 (ISSN) Behzadi, B ; Patel, B. H ; Galindo, A ; Ghotbi, C ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier  2005
    Abstract
An equation of state based on the statistical associating fluid theory for potentials of variable range (SAFT-VR) is used to model 7 hydrogen-bonding solvents and 23 electrolyte solutions. Solvent-solvent hydrogen bonding interactions are explicitly taken into account as in other versions of the SAFT approach. In addition, long-range Coulombic interactions between ionic species are accounted for using the non-restricted mean-spherical approximation, while solvent-solvent and solvent-ion dispersion interactions are included and are treated using Yukawa potentials. Previously a similar approach had been proposed in which the dispersion interactions were treated using square-well potentials. In...

    Abstract
Nanoparticles (NPs) are increasingly being used in different branches of science and in industrial applications; however, their rapid detection and characterization at low concentration levels have remained a challenge; more specifically, there is no single technique that can characterize the physicochemical properties of NPs (e.g. composition and size). In this work we have developed a colorimetric sensor array for defining the physicochemical properties of NPs in aqueous solution with ultra-low concentrations (e.g. 10-7g ml-1 for gold NPs). Various NPs were readily identified using a standard chemometric approach (i.e. hierarchical clustering analysis), with no misclassifications over 400...

A study of glycine-based dithiocarbamates as effective corrosion inhibitors for cold rolled carbon steel in HCl solutions

    Abstract
The corrosion inhibition of glycine-based dithiocarbamates with benzyl (BDTC) and propyl (PDTC) groups were investigated for cold rolled carbon steel (CRS) in 0.5 M HCl, indicating that the compounds as mixed type inhibitors significantly reduced the corrosion rate of the CRS due to the formation of a stable protective film on the metal surface. As confirmed by ATR-FTIR, SEM, AFM, XPS and theoretical studies, chemically adsorbed BDTC molecule is a better corrosion inhibitor with higher corrosion efficiency of about 98% at room temperature and a better thermal stability attributed to the Fe-S and Fe-N bindings, and in addition, to the presence of the benzene ring in the molecular structure. ©...

Chronic subdural hematoma outcome prediction using logistic regression and an artificial neural network

    , Article Neurosurgical Review ; Volume 32, Issue 4 , 2009 , Pages 479-484 ; 03445607 (ISSN) Abouzari, M ; Rashidi, A ; Zandi Toghani, M ; Behzadi, M ; Asadollahi, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Artificial neural networks (ANN) have not been used in chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) outcome prediction following surgery. We used two methods, namely logistic regression and ANN, to predict using eight variables CSDH outcome as assessed by the Glasgow outcome score (GOS) at discharge. We had 300 patients (213 men and 87 women) and potential predictors were age, sex, midline shift, intracranial air, hematoma density, hematoma thickness, brain atrophy, and Glasgow coma score (GCS). The dataset was randomly divided to three subsets: (1) training set (150 cases), (2) validation set (75 cases), and (3) test set (75 cases). The training and validation sets were combined for regression...

Modeling of Human Quadriceps Muscles and Design of a Magnetorheological Fluid-based Muscle Strengthening Device

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Seifi, Mohammad Mahdi (Author) ; Farahmand, Farzam (Supervisor) ; Behzadi Poor, Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The Quadriceps Muscle as one of the major muscles of the human body plays a key role in knee function. Strengthening of this muscle is recommanded to prevent knee pain and even cure some diseases. Many believe that by strengthening the medial part with respect to the lateral part of the quadriceps muscles, patellofemoral pain syndrome can be prevented or treated. In this regard, a muscle strengthening system, based on magneticorheological brake is designed which provides isometric, isotonic and isokinetic exercise of knee joint and also enables the selective muscle strengthening. Beforehand a musculoskeletal model of lower extremity is developed in OpenSim software, capable to estimate force...

Critique of Kuhns Histirical Perspective from Gadamerian Perspective

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Behzadi Moghaddam, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Moeinzadeh, Mahdi (Supervisor) ; Taghavi, Mostafa (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Truth and Method is one of the two or three most important works of this century on the philosophy of humanistic studies. The book is powerful, exciting, but undeniably difficult. Published when Gadamer was sixty, it gathers the ripe fruit of a lifetime's reading, teaching, and thinking. Because it is immersed in German philosophy and scholarship, the book is even more challenging for an American reader. An emerging body of commentary in English as well as the many shorter essays Gadamer has, happily, lived to write and which are increasingly available in translation provide additional means of access to his thought. Truth and Method, however, remains his magnum opus, the comprehensive and...

Developing a Group-Contribution Thermodynamic Model Based on the SAFT-Type Equation of State for Solvent-Polymer Systems

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mahmoudinasab, Reza (Author) ; Ghotbi, Cyrus (Supervisor) ; Taghikhani, Vahid (Supervisor) ; Behzadi, Bahman (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The usual method for determination of pure component parameters of SAFT-type Equation of State (EoS) is to fit them to experimental vapor pressure and liquid density data. Since high-molecular-weight compounds, like polymers, do not have a detectable vapor pressure, there is a need for a predictive calculation method for parameters of polymers and other complex compounds. In 2008, Tihic et al. proposed a Group Contribution (GC) method for estimating molecular parameters of PC-SAFT EoS. In this thesis, it is attempted to extend the suggested method of Tihic et al. by adjusting molecular parameters of PC-SAFT EoS for about 120 new non-associating compounds using experimental data extracted...

Using CFD simulations to improve the air-cooled steam condenser performance in severe windy conditions via proper tuning of blades pitch angles

    Abstract
The use of air-cooled steam condenser (ACSC) in thermal power plants has become so normal since a few decades ago. It is because there are so many valuable advantages with the ACSC implementation, e.g., little dependency on water consumption and benefiting from the forced convection heat transfer instead of the natural one to condense the steam. However, the thermal performance of an ACSC can be readily defected by the ambient wind; specifically, when the ambient temperature is high. This research work benefits from the computational fluid dynamics tool to study the details of ACSC's thermal performance in such undesirable ambient windy conditions. Furthermore, this work suggests an...

A theoretical study of repeating sequence in HRP II: A combination of molecular dynamics simulations and 17O quadrupole coupling tensors

    Abstract
Histidine rich protein II derived peptide (HRP II 169-182) was investigated by molecular dynamics, MD, simulation and 17O electric field gradient, EFG, tensor calculations. MD simulation was performed in water at 300 K with α-helix initial structure. It was found that peptide loses its initial α-helix structure rapidly and is converted to random coil and bent secondary structures. To understand how peptide structure affects EFG tensors, initial structure and final conformations resulting from MD simulations were used to calculate 17O EFG tensors of backbone carbonyl oxygens. Calculations were performed using B3LYP method and 6-31 + G* basis set. Calculated 17O EFG tensors were used to...

    Abstract
Photothermally heated and mesh-gridded membrane distillation (PHMD) system is proposed for desalination of high saline aqueous solutions. A triple-layered membrane, composed of a photothermal top nanofibrous layer containing polyacrylonitrile and dispersed carbon black nanoparticles and a polyvinylidene fluoride porous membrane supported on a nonwoven polyester, was prepared. A polypropylene mesh was used to hold the membrane. A 3D numerical simulation of the PHMD system was carried out by COMSOL and the appropriate length of the membrane module was determined. The effects of various operating parameters including solar radiation intensity on the permeate flux and thermal efficiency were...

Role of spin state on the geometry and nuclear quadrupole resonance parameters in hemin complex

    , Article Biophysical Chemistry ; Volume 134, Issue 3 , 2008 , Pages 200-206 ; 03014622 (ISSN) Behzadi, H ; van der Spoel, D ; Esrafili, M. D ; Parsafar, G. A ; Hadipour, N. L ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Theoretical calculations of structural parameters, 57Fe, 14N and 17O electric field gradient (EFG) tensors for full size-hemin group have been carried out using density functional theory. These calculations are intended to shed light on the difference between the geometry parameters, nuclear quadrupole coupling constants (QCC), and asymmetry parameters (ηQ) found in three spin states of hemin; doublet, quartet and sextet. The optimization results reveal a significant change for propionic groups and porphyrin plane in different spin states. It is found that all principal components of EFG tensor at the iron site are sensitive to electronic and geometry structures. A relationship between the...
